Two girls who come from two separate language worlds and learn how to communicated independently to try their best to make a connection with one another. I think this would be a great asset for EL teachers to have with younger grade levels. It is a very simple written book that gives listeners and readers the ability to view how someone (in EL learning or willing to learning a new language) can go about finding a way to communicate with another . Margaret and Margarita, Margaret y Margarita is a well-constructed bilingual text, as the language is facilitated by colorful drawings. I liked this book for three reasons. First, I liked how descriptive and unique the language is in this book. The writing throughout the book flows in both Spanish and English. Two little girls, Margaret and Margarita, both speak different languages and meet in the park. The girls only see similarities and are set on becoming each other's acquaintance despite the language barrier. My name is Margaret. My rabbit’s name is Susan. Susan says, Hola” and “Me llamo Margarita. Mi gatita se llama Susan. Susana dice, Hello”. Is an example of how two descriptive sentences are written in two languages. The writing was definitely engaging and relatable. Elementary school kids at this age level are usually learning a second language in school or have a kid in their classroom that speaks another language. This book can either teach/help students learn Spanish or English. Also, it can show what it takes for their classmate to hear another language they don’t know throughout each school day. Second, the illustrations were very powerful, as they are very colorful and drawn with detail. The drawings added depth to the text, as they captured what was going on throughout the story as well as showed you the two different cultures of the two girls. Lastly, the two young girls characters were believable and well developed. All they wanted to do was play in the park together with their stuff animals. The girls spend hours together playing and learning the sounds of another language. The illustrations are cleverly drawn to enable young readers to make these associations between the two languages. Overall, the main idea of this book is that you can still make friends with someone that speaks a different language. ( )
