Rub a Dub Dub is a good and fun narrative poem to read to children. The butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker are sent out to sea to catch salmon or trout. While at sea they encounter a problem with a rather large fish they have snagged. As the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker worry about their tub sinking they come to realize that there isn’t any reason to fret after all.
I think this narrative poem is a good one to read to children. It is a good story with conflict and a good ending. I think this an easy poem for children to understand. This narrative poem has elements of rhyming which all children seem to love.
After reading the story Rub a Dub Dub we would go back to the book and find the words that rhyme. I will ask the students to identify the sounds in the two words that make them rhythm. During this week we will be learning the short u sound. As we reread the book the students will point out the short u sound in rub, dub, dub.
Each week we will read a new nursery rhyme to introduce poetry to the classroom and to identify words that rhythm. After reading the nursery rhyme the children will pick their favorite nursery rhyme that we have read and draw a picture about the story. After the student has drawn and colored their pictures they will share them with the class and tell what the nursery rhythm was about.
