Eliot, which was published in May1947 by the Yale University Library.1 In the section devoted to T. S, Eliots own books,2 both English and American first editions aredescribed in some detail, but for books which contain merely contributions by him, I have described in detail only the actual first edition inbookform, with notes on their first publication i4ftgher country.Later impressions and editions.eJjgiwreQ except wheresome particular significanJP9Lotliem.The descriptive method I have used is intended to provide theinformation ordinarily needed about twentiethcentury books, in aform simple and brief enough to be easily understood. It is based uponthe method adopted by the American Library Association and used inthe cards printed and distributed in the United States by the Library ofCongress. I have modified this system, which ignores blank and certain other leaves, in order to account for all leaves, whether thoseupon which some printing appears, or blanks, or endpapers. Blankpages i.e. the blank versos or rectos of printed leaves are not mentioned in collations because they can obviously be inferred.The general rule is that when the unnumbered printed preliminaryleaves in a volume count up to the first numbered leaf, these leaves arenot specified in the collation. When they do not count up, they arespecified, e.g. 1 blank leaf, 3 leaves, 929 pp., since here the printedpreliminary material counts up to only six unnumbered pages. Whenthe first numbered page is the verso of a leaf unnumbered on the recto, the number of the recto is supplied in brackets, e.g. 1 blank leaf,3 leaves, 929 pp., thus indicating that 10 is the first pagenumber.The collation 29 pp. alone would mean that the preliminary materialcounts up to the first numbered page and that the text ends on a pagenumbered 29 in this example page 30, being blank, is not specified.The collation 29, l pp., on the other hand, would mean either thatthe text actually ends on the unnumbered page 30, or that an1 This in its turn was an elaborated version of A Catalogue of English andAmerican First Editions of the Writings of T.
