This is the second book I've read in the History Buff's series and I really enjoyed it. The format is great with a small intro section and then top ten lists that give a good overview of the subject and enough detail to keep you engaged, but not drowned in specifics. ( ) The History Buff's Guide to the Presidents: Top Ten Rankings of the Best, Worst, Largest and Most Controversial Facets of the American Presidency by Thomas R. Flagel is a book I think I should have loved but sadly it was just okay. Worth a read but it was full of facts stated either too boring or too opinionated. (Mainly slanted just right of center). I think it was boredom that got to me, there were tons of cool facts it was just the presentation that lacked. But fact filled it was! Opinions too. Oh, well. Got this from the library so it didn't cost me anything but my tax dollars hard at work. Not buff enough for this buff -- . As an avid reader of American history, I expected to enjoy this book. I didn't. The style is dry and clumsy, the information presented is not always correct, and the basis for some of the author's opinions is difficult to fathom -- Reagan among the top 10 militarily successful president, Lincoln among the 10 least militarily successful? At some point in the future I may go back and finish this, but after reading about two thirds of it I gave up. This book uses lighthearted prose and fun anecdotes to make reading about the presidents of the United States interesting and engaging. In combination with common knowledge factoids about the Leaders of the Free World, this book also offers some fun and interesting information that can be used to enhance a high school paper, or to stimulate conversation at dinner parties. For example, Grant's terms were so laced with corruption that they were entitled "8 years of stealing"(371). I had no idea how corrupt the country was in this time period, and it was interesting to come across this fun bit of information. i would definitely recommend this book. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
