Rather surprisingly, they are not all "how to write" tips. They're really short essays on ways to prevent obstacles that stop you from writing. The authors clearly understand academic pressures (like serving on numerous faculty committees), and they offer suggestions on how to limit them, so that there's more time for writing. A good read for the beginning academic; more seasoned professors can skim several chapters. ( )
Johnson and Mullen keep their text conversational and do not fill their discussions with gratuitous citations. When reading about writing, though, I am not a fan of language of the occult: Writing should be simplified, not mystified. The word "secret" or "secrets" appears eight times in the (four-page) preface alone – but the frequency fortunately drops drastically for the remainder of the text. Marketing a book that is filled with so-called secrets might help sell a few copies, but filling a book with straightforward, useful, and unpretentious tips and suggestions, as Johnson and Mullen have done here, should sell even more.
This is a pithy, no-nonsense, no-excuses guide to maximizing the quality and quantity of your scholarly products. Write to the Top! offers an accessible overview of the art of writing efficiently and effectively; it is the first book that explicitly summarizes the key elements to prolific productivity in academic settings.
