Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. I won a copy of this book through the early reviewers give away. I enjoyed this book. At first I was kind of hoping it wouldn't read so much as a text book but then quickly changed my mind. It is nice to be able to compartmentalize different areas of the year. A physical copy of this book would be a great gift to someone born in 1964. The only thing missing in my opinion is that it did not mention the start of Tim Horton's which is still going strong to this day.I recommend this book! Time Traveling to 1964 is a concise 100-page book that summarizes critical developments of that year in eight chapters, covering news and current events, crime and punishment, entertainment, sports, general information, births and deaths, statistics, and iconic advertisements. This is the same organization used in earlier editions focusing on selected years in the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. Lists of events accompanied by relevant photos and one-paragraph summaries are found in the book. The following are a few of the significant events that occurred in 1964. The Beatles arrived in America and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. An earthquake in Alaska, measuring 9.2. on the Richter scale caused tsunamis and soil liquification, lifted parts of Kodiak 30 feet, and sank areas in Anchorage eight feet. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in America. President Lyndon Johnson signed the U. S. Civil Rights Act into law. The Surgeon General released a report declaring that smoking is damaging to your health. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were married for the first time. The Rolling Stones made their first U. S. Concert tour. Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens, New York, raised a national uproar and stimulated an extensive program of psychological research on the bystander effect. A trio of civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi. The top movies of the year were Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady. The top album of the year was A Hard Day’s Night by the Beatles. Other notable songs and albums that appeared were Oh, Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison, Hello Dolly by Louis Armstrong, and You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling by the Righteous Brothers. The television show, Jeopardy, debuted. Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) defeated Sonny Liston, becoming the world’s heavyweight champion for the first time. Readers who lived through 1964 will enjoy the reminders in this volume, while younger readers will learn about developments that are still remembered (and celebrated) today. Random compendiums of annual happenings are usually not much of a draw for me but with the birth year tease—why not. Anticipated that at best I might skim over as many articles as I read. But alas, the choice of articles was keen, the writing dense, concise and thoughtful and the affect modestly compelling. Still, difficult to just sit down and keep reading since you are just moving from box to box with no through-line but in short doses, entertaining and recommended. Thanks very much to LibraryThing and the author once again, for letting me read the book in exchange for a honest review. In this case there is not much to say, I picked this title because it was the year I was born and it doesn't disappoint. A very nice pdf with a nice classification and nice images, quite complete. I had seen other books of the kind, but not with so wide a range and so illustrated. Read it in one go of one or two hours in an afternoon. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
