Bringing together an exciting group of knowledge workers, scholars and activists from across fields, this book revisits a foundational question of the Enlightenment: what is "the last or furthest end of knowledge"? It is a book about why we do what we do, and how we might know when we are done. In the reorganization of knowledge that characterized the Enlightenment, disciplines were conceived as having particular "ends," both in terms of purposes and end-points. As we experience an ongoing shift to the knowledge economy of the Information Age, this collection asks whether we still conceptualize knowledge in this way. Does an individual discipline have both an inherent purpose and a natural endpoint? What do an experiment on a fruit fly, a reading of a poem, and the writing of a line of code have in common? Focusing on areas as diverse as AI; biology; Black studies; literary studies; physics; political activism; and the concept of disciplinarity itself, contributors uncover a life after disciplinarity for subjects that face immediate threats to the structure if not the substance of their contributions. Riunendo un entusiasmante gruppo di lavoratori della conoscenza, studiosi e attivisti provenienti da diversi campi, questo libro rivisita una questione fondamentale dell'Illuminismo: qual è “l'ultimo o il limite più lontano della conoscenza”? È un libro sul perché facciamo quello che facciamo e su come potremmo sapere quando abbiamo finito.
Nella riorganizzazione della conoscenza che caratterizzò l'Illuminismo, le discipline furono concepite come aventi “fini” particolari, sia in termini di scopi che di punti finali. Mentre assistiamo al continuo passaggio all'economia della conoscenza dell'era dell'informazione, questa raccolta si chiede se concettualizziamo ancora la conoscenza in questo modo. Una disciplina individuale ha sia uno scopo intrinseco che un punto finale naturale? Cosa hanno in comune un esperimento su un moscerino della frutta, la lettura di una poesia e la scrittura di una riga di codice?
Concentrarsi su aree diverse come l'intelligenza artificiale; biologia; Studi sui neri; studi letterari; fisica; attivismo politico; e il concetto stesso di disciplinarità, i contributori scoprono una vita dopo la disciplinarità per soggetti che affrontano minacce immediate alla struttura se non alla sostanza dei loro contributi.
