"Get ready for another twisty domestic thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of THE SOULMATE. From the outside, Alicia, Jessica and Norah might seem like ordinary women you'd meet on the street any day of the week. Sure, Jessica has a little OCD and Norah has some anger issues. And Alicia has low self-esteem that manifests itself in surprising ways. But these three have a bond that no one can fully understand. It's a bond that takes them back decades, to when they were girls, and they lived on a farm with a foster mother named Miss Fairchild. Miss Fairchild had rules. Miss Fairchild could be unpredictable. And Miss Fairchild was never, ever to be crossed. In a moment of desperation, the three broke away from Miss Fairchild, and they thought they were free. But the reach of someone with such power is long, and even though they never saw her again, she was always somewhere in the shadows of their minds. When bones are discovered buried under the farmhouse of their childhood, they are called in by the police to tell what they know. Against their will, they are brought back to the past, and to Miss Fairchild herself. DARLING GIRLS asks the questions: what are we capable of when in a desperate place? How much can we hide the demons inside us? And can the past ever truly be buried?"--… (altro)

I've read a couple of Sally Hepworth novels and liked them. This one had its moments and twists, but it took me two days to read instead of the one sitting from other of her novels. I think I was distracted by a character's name being the same as mine (ha!). 2024 read. ( )

I am a member of the “I will read whatever Sally Hepworth writes club” and I am never disappointed. Not only does she tell a wickedly good story but she plumbs the depths of some often ugly social issues. Wild Meadows - we are told that:

“the media love the juxtaposition of the whimsical country estate and the atrocities
that happened therein. They also love anything to do with foster children.”

Now if that doesn’t suck you into a story …. Three young women return to their foster home and relive “loss, shame and hate.” They are separate but a unit by what they have endured and this is their story with its losses and triumphs. Told in multiple times lines and POVs - the narrators are tricky, very tricky. Hepworth employs the timeless notion how the abused will return to the abuser, seeking recognition, approval, anything positive. Oh this was so good, so well told with great one liners and terrific smirk worthy dialog and inner ruminations.

Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for a copy. ( )

Three women are contacted by the police to assist in a case. When Wild Meadows, the home they were raised in as foster children, was razed, a body was found under the house. Now the women must come to terms with the time they spent there with their foster mother, Holly Fairchild. As each woman recounts their memories, the story of their childhood with a woman who was both controlling and manipulative comes to light.
Chilling story - especially the final chapter! ( )

This book follows three former foster sisters who grew up in an abusive foster home. They've all done their best to try and forget about their childhoods and move on. But they're forced to remember when they're contacted by police about human bones found at their former foster home.

This was an emotional, psychological thriller. Sally Hepworth consistently writes 4 star reads/listens in my opinion. If you've liked her previous books you will love this one too.

Thank you netgalley and Macmillan audio for giving me an advanced review copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. ( ( )

3.5*

Sally Hepworth always has a good story to tell and her newest is no different. The story focuses on Mrs. Fairchild and her relationships with her foster daughters. Over the years she fostered many, but the story centers around the eldest three and another younger child that cannot be accounted for.

I feel I must disclose my state of mind in reading this book. I was post surgery and on pain pills, so each chapter featuring a foster child had me guessing at who and what happened. I also had a bit of trouble keeping track of the girls.

By the time I got near the end of the book, I had my theories, which were close but not on target. I loved the surprise, twisty ending.

Many thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read an advance copy. I am happy to recommend this to readers and give my honest review. ( )
