"Get ready for another twisty domestic thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of THE SOULMATE. From the outside, Alicia, Jessica and Norah might seem like ordinary women you'd meet on the street any day of the week. Sure, Jessica has a little OCD and Norah has some anger issues. And Alicia has low self-esteem that manifests itself in surprising ways. But these three have a bond that no one can fully understand. It's a bond that takes them back decades, to when they were girls, and they lived on a farm with a foster mother named Miss Fairchild. Miss Fairchild had rules. Miss Fairchild could be unpredictable. And Miss Fairchild was never, ever to be crossed. In a moment of desperation, the three broke away from Miss Fairchild, and they thought they were free. But the reach of someone with such power is long, and even though they never saw her again, she was always somewhere in the shadows of their minds. When bones are discovered buried under the farmhouse of their childhood, they are called in by the police to tell what they know. Against their will, they are brought back to the past, and to Miss Fairchild herself. DARLING GIRLS asks the questions: what are we capable of when in a desperate place? How much can we hide the demons inside us? And can the past ever truly be buried?"--… (altro)

Three foster children bond when they are fostered and raised by Miss Fairchild. The girls are told are how lucky they are to have been rescued from bad home situations. But only they know the truth about Miss Fairchild, and no one believes them. Finally, they break away from Miss Fairchild, but she is never far from their minds even when they are adults. The past inevitably catches up with them when a body is discovered under home they lived in as children. This well written thriller builds suspense with each chapter, and the shocking end will leave you breathless. ( )

This was a twisty mystery! I like that every time I thought I had it all figured out, Sally Hepworth would prove me wrong and I would be forced to pivot my way of thinking. I look forward to reading more of Sally's work in the future as this was a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Jessica Clarke did a great job narrating this novel and I will be looking for more of Jessica's work as well. ( )

I've read a couple of Sally Hepworth novels and liked them. This one had its moments and twists, but it took me two days to read instead of the one sitting from other of her novels. I think I was distracted by a character's name being the same as mine (ha!). 2024 read. ( )

I am a member of the “I will read whatever Sally Hepworth writes club” and I am never disappointed. Not only does she tell a wickedly good story but she plumbs the depths of some often ugly social issues. Wild Meadows - we are told that:

“the media love the juxtaposition of the whimsical country estate and the atrocities
that happened therein. They also love anything to do with foster children.”

Now if that doesn’t suck you into a story …. Three young women return to their foster home and relive “loss, shame and hate.” They are separate but a unit by what they have endured and this is their story with its losses and triumphs. Told in multiple times lines and POVs - the narrators are tricky, very tricky. Hepworth employs the timeless notion how the abused will return to the abuser, seeking recognition, approval, anything positive. Oh this was so good, so well told with great one liners and terrific smirk worthy dialog and inner ruminations.

Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for a copy. ( )
