Interesting that the author used a hotel she stays in, loves, and write in, as the base location for this mystery novel. No wonder she had such good descriptions of the location and surroundings. The characters were quite varied but none of them really stood out as more interesting than another and I never got the feeling that I knew them other than very superficially, mostly in relation to their occupations. ( ) LAST NIGHT is a murder mystery/family drama set during a blizzard on the coast of Rhode Island. A famous and very wealthy artist is found dead in the snow, and her 6-year old daughter goes missing. The premise grabbed me, but overall, I wasn't wowed. The writing was dry, and I never felt truly invested in the story. There was a lot of bland dialogue that came off as unnatural and wooden. The mystery itself was quite complex, but unfortunately too much dull filler slowed down the plot. This book continues the story of some of the characters from Last Day, a previous book by this author. I wouldn’t call it a series, though. You can read this one as a stand-alone book. Detective Conor Reid and Kate Woodward are now dating and happen to be at the scene of a murder and kidnapping while on vacation. The location is out of Detective Conor’s jurisdiction; however, he feels obligated to investigate, leaving the Connecticut PD in the cold. I don’t believe that works in real life. Other plot twists didn’t feel plausible either, like a sister killing her sister and a father who walks away from his orphaned child when his wife is murdered. Even Hadley—the grieving aunt—was lacking in personality and warmth. This book didn’t do much for me. Wealthy Maddie Morrison has been shot while a blizzard batters Rhode Island, and her six-year-old daughter is missing. Conor Reid is a detective staying at the same grand hotel who becomes involved in the murder and child abduction. He's aided by his girlfriend and his Coast Guard captain brother as they sort through various clues and suspects. And there's a lot of suspects. There were so many twists in this book. I really had not idea who killed Maddie and why for the longest time, which is exactly what I want in a murder mystery. As a former resident of Connecticut, I liked the setting. The characters were all interesting in various ways, leaving red herrings all over the place. A very satisfactory story. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
"A fierce blizzard is burying the eastern seaboard, but on the icy Rhode Island shore renowned artist Maddie Morrison finds warm sanctuary from a contentious divorce at the legendary Ocean House. Hours later, her body is found buried under a blanket of snow and her little daughter, CeCe, has disappeared without a trace. For Detective Conor Reid; his brother, Tom, a coast guard commander; and Maddie's grieving sister, Hadley, the posh hotel becomes ground zero for an investigation. Trapped by the blizzard, they must hunker down and determine who in the young mother's life could have possibly wanted her dead. There are stories of a twisted romantic past. Of old jealousies and resentments that still cut to the bone. And a history of greed, rage, and revenge that created the perfect storm for murder. A storm that has just begun."-- Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
