YA. School Stories. Teenage Issues. Graphic Novel. Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me gets a Y2K twist in this coming-of-age young adult graphic novel from acclaimed comic artist Kate Leth about a 2000s goth teen whose favorite part of her new town is the mall. Liv Holme is not exactly thrilled to be moving to a new town with her mother. After all, high school can be brutal, even more so when you're a fifteen-year-old, bisexual goth. But Liv is determined to be who she is, bullies or not. Still, being the new kid and the only out student brings her a lot of unwelcome attention, and Liv flounders in her search for community. The only person who makes time for her is one of the teachers, but Liv isn't sure how to feel about the way he behaves toward her. Thankfully, she's found the perfect escape: the mall. Under its fluorescent lights, Liv feels far away from her parents' strained marriage and the peers who don't understand her. Amid the bright storefronts, food court smell, and anonymous shoppers, Liv is safely one of the crowd and can enjoy the feeling of calling the shots in her own life for once. With the help of her suburban refuge, Liv sets off on a journey of self-acceptance and learns to navigate the ups and downs of high school and to recognize true friendship. 12 yrs+… (altro)

"Don't shrink yourself for other people, okay?" (Mr. Trent, to Liv, 57)

The message is good, but the messenger - an apparently caring teacher - turns out to be bad. Liv Holme is new to Harbour City High School, and after a bad experience with people she thought were friends at her old school - they reacted poorly when she told them she was bi - she isn't very trusting. Eventually, she comes out of her shell a little bit, and when Mr. Trent hits on her, she's able to tell a friend - who had the same experience and transferred schools because of it. Liv's mom - whose husband, Liv's dad, is constantly away "for work" but is likely cheating on her - marches into school to deal with the problem. ( )

Trigger Warnings: Child Grooming

Liv Holme is starting over in a new town with her mom. And a new town means a new high school. If that’s not hard enough, Liv is a fifteen-year-old bisexual goth. As Liv tries to find her community, the only person who seems to make time for her is one of her teachers, Mr. Trent, but she’s not sure how she feels about the way he acts towards her sometimes. Thankfully, she finds solace in the mall, where she’s away from all her troubles. Now she must set off on a journey of self-acceptance and the ups and downs of life and high school.

I loved the art in this - that is one of the main reasons I wanted to read this.

Secondly, the storyline isn’t what I thought it would be and I really enjoyed it.

I both feel like it could have been longer (more in depth), but then at the same time, the story fit in the page length that it was. There was just a lot going on - especially with stuff like her Dad and sometimes conversations with Liv’s mom, I felt like it could have been more elaborated on, but I still understood what was going on.

I’ve already recommended this to two friends, so this will be on my graphic novel list for sure. ( )

Yeah, alright, sure Kate, tear out my heart and shred it. S'ok, I wasn't using it or anything...

Which is to say, this is brilliant. It's soft, and sweet, and nostalgic, and fun, and awkward, and hard, and complicated, and important, and devastating, and hopeful, and CUUUTTTTTEEEEEEE, and many more adjectives that I'm done thinking of.

Do yourself a favour and read this! Your library probably has a copy! If they don't, tell them they're wrong and request they get one. ( )
