Queer middle-aged librarian Nan Nethercott, a wisecracking hypochondriac with a lackluster career and a nonexistent love life, needs to make a drastic life change before it's too late. When she lands a job as librarian in a seemingly idyllic small town in southern New Jersey, Nan quickly discovers unforeseen challenges. Nan's landlady, Immaculata, launches daily intrusions from below. The library, housed in the former town jail, is overrun by marauding middle-schoolers. A mysterious reader leaves distressing messages in book stacks all over the library. Thomasina, the irresistible butch deli owner, is clearly a delicious affair and not the relationship Nan craves. There's no turning back though. Nan must come up with her own wildly unorthodox solutions to what the town and its people throw at her and fight for what she wants until she makes a shiny new life--one with her first true home, surprising friends, a meaningful career, and a promising new love.… (altro)

The New Town Librarian by Kathy Anderson is a light, fun read that is sure to leave most readers feeling warm and content.

I saw a comment that I don't fully agree with but hints at how I feel about this book and others like it. The statement was that there wasn't really a plot, but it is a story you read not for a plot. I understand their point but need to fine tune it for me. I do think it has a plot and it is more subtle than many. Maybe a midlife coming-of-age, if that is even a thing. Maybe even that being content isn't enough. Whatever broad stroke you want to use, it is a woman making change as a way to make something happen, with unexpected consequences both good and bad, though ultimately good. The point for me, though, is that I didn't need a complex plot to enjoy reading the book. There is enough of a plot to tie the scenes together into a coherent whole, even if I probably remember it almost like a collection of connected stories, or maybe vignettes.

Lovely insights into human behavior and the dynamics between people seeking their own happiness. Quirky characters who range from cringeworthy to sweet. And humor to keep everything fun and moving along. I don't know what to say beyond it was actually enjoyable to read, which is sometimes plenty.

This novel was so fun ! As a former librarian, I could totally relate to the heroine’s experiences with the patrons. Grumpy Nan Nethercott is an adorable character : queer middle-aged woman, she still has no idea what to do with her life. So her new job in a small town in southern New Jersey sounds like a new start. She is finally head librarian, yeah ! But her dream coming true isn’t exactly what she imagined.

I love the secondary characters and how they really help in the development of the story and the heroine’s growth. Nan’s landlady, Immaculata and her husband are the best ! It is a story about a Found family, but it is also above all about the love of books, about the joy of coming together to talk about books and how books can change lives. It is definitely an adorable cozy romcom, and I really enjoyed it. ( )
