Very interesting look at another culture. Not quite up to the standard of Crying in H Mart, but it did keep my interest. ( )

nonfiction - memoir, Chinese American woman recollects her childhood (immigrating from China to Nebraska as a small child and relocating to mostly white neighborhood of Eden Prairie, MN), her obsession with fashion (what else is fashion if not trying to fit in?) and the many trips taken by her and her mother (sometimes together, sometimes apart) up until the pandemic in 2020.

I loved this portrait of a mother-daughter relationship--as in many others' lives, this was not an outwardly warm/affectionate upbringing but nonetheless one full of love and care for the other, ever so carefully coaxed into life within the pages of the book. The Amsterdam chapter was especially fun to read (imagine your own mother trying weed for the first time on her own!) but the whole thing was very relatable and readable. ❤️ More, please! ( )
