The Summer of Songbirds is a story of three young girls who meet at a very young age when they are sent to an overnight camp. They become forever friends, helping each other even into their adult years. When they learn that the camp is failing and the property is at risk of being sold, the girls come together to help save it.

The characters are well rounded and the camp setting is beautifully described. It felt good to see old friends unite to help the camp they love remain open. But the girls do not see eye to eye when it comes to romance. This is not a squeaky-clean read for those who prefer that drugs and sex (not a lot, but it is there) are left out of the picture.

From my perspective, the story looks back on the camp days through rose-colored glasses. I went to an overnight camp when I was just a few years older than the girls in the story and, while I made some wonderful summer friends, those relationships did not last long. Of course, we did not have the convenience of computers and smartphones to make keeping in touch easy, so my outlook comes from that point of view.

This is a sweet story – one that a reader can enjoy sitting in a comfortable chair or while relaxing on the beach. ( )

Kristy Wooodson Harvey is one of my favorite authors. All of her stories are a delight to read and always set somewhere I would truly love to be. I never experienced going to a summer camp but so many people grew up with this being a staple in their childhood. This story brings you some of the best parts of finding extended families and wanting to be a part of a bigger world out there. ( )

Excellent book. Some of the relationships and motivations seemed off. Great epilogue. ( )

This is the story of the songbirds, young women who first met at summer camp when they were 6 years old. Through the years, their friendship solidified and grew. Daphne and Lanier were the best of friends, almost sisters, with Mary Stuart filling out the group. Daphne's aunt June owns Camp Holly Springs, which is now in financial trouble. The songbirds agonize over losing their camp that helped them build confidence and trust, and was also the site of their first loves.
Now, in their 30s, Mary Stuart is married, Lanier is engaged, and Daphne is a single mom. But, Daphne still yearns for Huff, her first love and Lanier's brother, but Lanier doesn't want them together due to Daphne's troubled past.
Can they overcome obstacles and find love, family, and save the camp? Great story of friendship. ( )

If you love summer reads about sisterhood, this book is for you. We are introduced to Daphne, Lanier and Mary Stuart, as little girls they are in the same cabin at an all girls sleep away camp. The trio become fast friends and stay that way thru their growing up years, even becoming counselors, in spite of trials and tribulations. They come together this summer to try to save their much loved Camp Holly Springs from closing.

Have read and enjoyed previous books by this author, I had to read this one. Characters are easy to like, flawed, relatable each in their own way. They are argumentative, supportive, inquisitive. Each woman tells her story, with the addition of Daphne’s Aunt June, owner of the ailing camp. The storylines were easy to follow and all come together nicely. Perfect book for a late summer vacation, a lazy weekend at home or get the kids on the bus, grab a coffee and read! ( )
