OMG, twists galore! I certainly didn't see any of them coming, not even a slight hint.
Definitely worth staying up late to finish the book.
I highly recommend this one to go straight to the top of your tbr pile.
One to look out for and not to be missed. ( )

Not even Alex's wife Beth knows who Alex really is, and what he has done. In fact, as a reader, you will make assumptions about who Alex is, and you won't always be right. For this plot has many twists and many red herrings.

Things get worse when Beth invites a pregnant friend to live with them. This arrangement turns out to be far more permanent than temporary and Zara has her suspicions about Alex.

And then, for a surprise birthday present, Beth sends Alex's DNA off for testing, ostensibly to give him details about his origins, but actually prompting a nasty surprise.

This is one of those books where you won't see the eventual results coming. ( )

This is simply a brilliant read, one of the best ever! Author Louise Candlish, who has written 16 novels, has been described by one reviewer as queen of the sucker-punch twist and I failed to come up with a better description. Here she tells the story of Alex, who is living comfortably with his wife in a leafy London suburb until a campaign by locals to create a nature trail on a strip of land that’s lain disused for years is successful. As the landscapers get to work, Alex struggles to quell his fears that a deadly secret will be uncovered. It dates from 25 or so years ago when he became embroiled in a relationship with a seductive young woman who worked in the same office building as him. Candlish’s creation of the tension that entwines the young lovers is exquisite. One by one, workmates, flatmates and partners are ensnared and it’s no surprise that the result is a police search. The result for me was an immediate search for previous novels Candlish has written. ( )

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

This is set in the present day from the perspective of Alex (who we learn very quickly used to be called something else) and in 1995 from the perspective of Rick, who gets involved with a victim of domestic violence called Marina. I found this very slow - there just wasn't enough plot to fill the pages. I guessed both of what I would describe as the twists, but the characters were all so unlikeable and all behaved so bizarrely (even the blameless Beth was very odd) that there was little emotional satisfaction in the resolution. Alex and Beth live in Silver Vale. Beth has been involved in a local nature reserve project which is due to open up for people to enjoy. Alex however is very on edge about the whole project. Back to 1995 and Rick meets Marina and events escalate very quickly.

I have only just discovered Louise Candlish and have enjoyed the books that I have read so far. This book is no exception.

The story is told in the present following Alex and then back to 1995 with Rick. In true thriller form both stories are connected. I have to admit I didn't quite guess what was going on so for me the twist towards the end of the book was unexpected.

The story was compelling and I did want to know what was going to happen. Knowing what I know now the clues were there. I found the book a very good read, although it was thrillerland at times it really didn't matter.

So far every book I've read by this author have been enjoyable so I will definitely be reading more by her. ( )
