Another lovely book of poetry by a saint who is not as well known as she should be. Barbara Newman, the translator, presents Hildegard's Latin text on one page and splendidly provides two English translations: a "frankly and blithely interpretive" verse translation on the facing page, and a literal prose translation in a footnote at the end of each piece.

Her introduction discusses some of the difficulty facing a translator of poetry and of the Symphonia in particular, and explains some of her choices:

Medieval poetry in general favored hyperbole, and Hildegard in particular was no advocate of the via negativa. Her way of approaching the ineffable was to make the strongest positive statement her tongue could express. Modern English, on the other hand, is a language of understatement, and in free verse it is almost a truism that less is more. So, in order to convey the rapt intensity of Hildegard's praise, I have actually had to tone down some of her expressions.(62)


We have some of Hildegard's music, as well as her texts. I found both CDs and MP3s available for sale at Amazon -- and in my very first venture into this modern world of buying and downloading music, I was able to purchase a single track, O Ignis Spiritus (O Fiery Spirit), to play at class tonight while I read the English verse translation to begin my class presentation on ecological pneumatology. SINFONÍA DE LA ARMONÍA DE LAS REVELACIONES CELESTIALES

En 1998, a propósito de la conmemoración de los 900 años
del nacimiento de la visionaria Hildegard de Bingen (1098-
1179), se produjo a nivel mundial una verdadera eclosión
de diversas celebraciones que se manifestaron en seminarios,
congresos, publicaciones, discografía, etc. Sin embargo, hasta
hoy el mundo hispanoparlante ha podido acceder sólo
fragmentariamente a la vasta obra de esta mujer del siglo XII.

Hacia el año 1150, Hildegard reunió sus composiciones y
formó con ellas un ciclo lírico completo al que llamó
Sinfonía de la armonía de las revelaciones celestiales, corpus
que incluye la notación musical de la propia autora. Las
canciones de la Sinfonía fueron compuestas para diversas
ocasiones litúrgicas, para las horas canónicas, las fiestas de
los santos, la consagración de una capilla y para algunas de
las fiestas del ciclo litúrgico destinadas a Dios, a la Trinidad,
o a María. De acuerdo con su pensamiento, la música y el
canto, en particular, eran una actividad humana por excelencia;
por ello, en muchos de sus escritos la visionaria desarrolló sus
ideas sobre la importancia y trascendencia de la música en la
historia humana. Este pensamiento se expresa en el ordenamiento
de las canciones, fundamentado en una concepción jerárquica del
mundo; esta jerarquía, evidente en el orden de aparición de las
canciones, hace pensar en un relato subyacente, a saber, una
Historia Sagrada»,

En la recuperación reciente de la obra de Hildegard- sus
textos visionarios, médicos, científicos, además de su
epistolario- parece claro que su poesía lírica y dramática ha
sido relativamente descuidada por la crítica literaria; por el
contrario, la Sinfonfa y su Ordo virtutum han sido muy valorados
por musicólogos y artistas, que han estudiado y eje
citado sus obras. De ahí la importancia de esta traducción,
la primera versión íntegra en lengua castellana, que pone a
disposición del lector la lírica hildegardiana, caracterizada
por su verso libre y por el uso de un latín poco pulido.

Las dificultades de la traducción estriban en las idiosincrasias
hildegardianas y la visión de mundo compartida en el siglo XII.
Lo primero ha supuesto sumergirse en sus otros textos. Lo segundo,
adentrarse en la cultura medieval cristiana, tal como se vivía en el
siglo XII. Así, estas dificultades nos han llevado a la elaboración de
comentarios a cada poema para brindarle al lector una posibilidad más
amplia de interpretación textual, al proporcionarle algunas claves de
lectura. Estas últimas permiten entender qué es contextual (conceptual,
histórico, bíblico, conventual mitológico) y qué es propiamente hildegardiano;
en suma, qué distingue a Hildegard como autora.lustración de cubierta:
