"Jane Start is thirty-three, broke, and recently single. Ten years prior, she had a hit song--written by world-famous superstar Jonesy--but Jane hasn't had a breakout since. Now she's living out of four garbage bags at her parents' house, reduced to performing to Karaoke tracks in Las Vegas. But when her longtime manager Pippa sends Jane to London to regroup, she's seated next to an intriguing stranger on the flight--the other Tom Hardy, an elegantly handsome Oxford professor of literature. Jane is instantly smitten by Tom, and soon, truly inspired. But it's not Jane's past alone that haunts her second chance at stardom, and at love. Is Tom all that he seems? And can Jane emerge from the shadow of Jonesy's earlier hit, and into the light of her own?"--… (altro)

Meh I just didn't like her. Wish I had bailed. It also wasn't as music centric as it seemed. ( )

In the author's spirit of quoting lyrics, I should have known better. Being a cute singer with a famous side-eye does not an instant author make. Your mileage may vary, of course - 'spicy' romance readers who don't mind if the female characters completely flunk the Bechdel test will probably love this, but for me this was nearly four hundred pages of desperation and I started skim-reading well before the midway point. Yes, I did get the references to classic literature, like Jane Eyre and Rebecca, but I was offended on behalf of better authors. Also, the 'British' clichés were agonising - instead of cribbing from PBS Masterpiece, please stay stateside!

I did not believe in or care about a single character, especially Jane, the one hit wonder who latches onto a bloke she meets on the plane, moves in with him two weeks later, and then suddenly feels betrayed when she learns that he was engaged. Love interest Tom, all blue eyes and brooding spires, is equally bland.

Cool cover, but corny contents. Not for me, I'm afraid. ( )

Ok, I finished it. 2.5 stars cause I can't tell if it's truly that bad or if this is just the type of romance I have no tolerance for. So, the main character is super famous for covering some guy's song once? I don't get it. There's just truly not much plot here and at the same time the start of like three possibly decent plots. Meh. ( )

Not going to give a star ranking since I cut and ran at 10% I went into this wanting to love this. I think Susanna Hoffs is really cool. That said IMO this is just bad. Slow moving with uncompelling and cliched character backstory. i was surprised at my reaction since I generally like prematurely washed up artist tales.

Really liked the use of various songs in this book as chapter headings. Only one I didn't know. It was a little romp down a musical memory lane, and only an occasional ear worm. ( )
