Maggie Mackay is going to Blairmore in the Outer Hebrides to find out the truth once and for all. When she was five she went there with her mom as she believed she was the reincarnation of Andrew MacNeil who was drowned at sea. This book certainly had an eerie feel to it. I loved that it was set on a Scottish Island and I can't help getting 'Wicker Man' vibes. The descriptions were just brilliant and certainly gave a sense of place. The island has it's community of people with their ways, superstitions and folklore galore. There are also plenty of references to Norse mythology. I enjoyed the storyline and the mystery surrounding the drowning. The story had a good steady pace and kept my interest. I loved the close knit community of the islanders and their secrets. I'm not sure for me though that the supernatural side of the story worked. I think the story would have been enough without it. I don't mind books with reincarnation, I've read plenty but I just think in this instance it wasn't needed. I did enjoy this book eventhough the supernatural part wasn't for me. I have got Mirrorland on my kindle so will definitely give it a go. I loved the idea of the book, but I felt it lacked something for me. There is something fascinating about the concept of reincarnation, and I was curious if Maggie was a reincarnation of a dead man. There's a lot to like about The Blackhouse; it's well-written and the story is intriguing. I just felt that something was missing. It was not a book I could not put down, I wasn't really engrossed by the story. And I really, really wanted to love the story more than I did and take the characters to my heart. Alas, I found myself not really warming up to Maggie and the rest, and that's probably why I did not really enjoy the book as much as I wanted to. Sure, I wanted to know the truth, but I was not hooked. I do recommend the book. It was refreshingly different from the usual crime novel. The ending was really good. Maggie has known her entire life that something is just not right with her. When she was 5 years old, she announced that she was a reincarnated man. This drew all kinds of media attention and bad allegations. Now, 20 years later Maggie has returned and she is wanting answers. I enjoyed a great deal about this novel. The setting, the weirdness of Maggie and then roll in the past and you just have an all around good read. It does have a great many characters and that was a bit tough in places. But, that is just a minor issue. Maggie really kept the story going for me. I wanted her to achieve her goal! I wanted to know everything. And the way the author kept me glued to the setting of this isle off Scotland…I felt like I was right there experiencing all the weather and the weird townspeople. Need a creepy novel…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today. I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
From the author of the "dark and devious...beautifully written" (Stephen King) Mirrorland comes a richly atmospheric thriller set on an isolated Scottish island where nothing is as it seems and shocking twists lie around every corner. A remote village. A deadly secret. An outsider who knows the truth. Robert Reid moved his family to Scotland's Outer Hebrides in the 1990s, driven by hope, craving safety and community, and hiding a terrible secret. But despite his best efforts to fit in, Robert is always seen as an outsider. And as the legendary and violent Hebridean storms rage around him, he begins to unravel, believing his fate on the remote island of Kilmeray cannot be escaped. For her entire life, Maggie MacKay has sensed something was wrong with her. When Maggie was five years old, she announced that a man on Kilmeray--a place she'd never visited--had been murdered. Her unfounded claim drew media attention and turned the locals against each other, creating rifts that never mended. Nearly twenty years later, Maggie is determined to find out what really happened, and what the islanders are hiding. But when she begins to receive ominous threats, Maggie is forced to consider how much she is willing to risk to discover the horrifying truth. Unnerving, enthralling, and filled with gothic suspense, The Blackhouse is a spectacularly sinister tale readers won't soon forget. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

As she grows to learn about the people who live there she realizes that many do not want her there and that they have many secrets they want to keep within their small community.
The story is told from two different perspectives, that of Maggie, our protagonist, and Robert from 25 or so years ago. As their stories start to overlap, Maggie comes to realize that some truths are best left alone.
Overall a really good read, I loved the touches of Norse and Irish mythology that were used throughout the story. I actually enjoyed this book more than her first book, Mirrorland. ( )
