Maggie is offered an escape from bombed-out London when her new job takes her from the working-class East End to a stately home in the Cotswolds. She's nervous but determined to do her bit for the war effort - and away from the city's chaos, perhaps Maggie can secretly track down her mother, a German national arrested after the war began. Grand Snowden Hall is an utterly alien world to Maggie, but she soon makes friends with the other residents, who come from all walks of life. When she's courted by Jack, a dashing pilot and heir to the Snowden Estate, it seems as though Maggie's living in a fairy-tale. But are Jack's intentions as honest as they appear? Or is Ray, the young clerk who is aloof and yet familiar, the diamond hiding in the rough?
