E' un racconto brevissimo in cui fantasmi e occulto sono solo un pretesto per tracciare il ritratto di una certa sonnolenta (nomen omen) provincia americana di fine settecento: le storie spaventose fanno parte dell'ambiente, pittoresche esattamente quanto il paesaggio bucolico.
Ho apprezzato molto le atmosfere e l'ironia garbata, per i miei gusti però le descrizioni hanno avuto una parte troppo preponderante: già la vicenda è breve, se più di metà dello spazio è dedicato a piante, animali e cibarie il mio interesse non sarà mai catturato fino in fondo.
Riconosco che Irving ha una penna magnifica, ma il racconto non mi ha conquistato e difficilmente mi rimarrà impresso. ( )
