Der Stil, die Sprache hat mir wirklich gut gefallen!
Allerdings weiß ich nicht so richtig, was ich da jetzt eigentlich gelesen habe. Und hätte ich geahnt, dass es am Ende um Krebs und Sterben geht, hätte ich das Buch nicht gelesen! ( )

De korte, krachtige titel van deze roman ‘vernietigen’ voorspelt niet veel goeds. “Daar gaan we weer”, denk je, en je zet je schrap voor een zoveelste verzameling Houellebecqiaanse uithalen naar onze moderne samenleving. En inderdaad, dit boek leest als een bloemlezing van typische thema’s uit het oeuvre van deze zowel gevierde als uitgespuwde schrijver: het eenzame, nihilistische bestaan van de moderne mens, het door het neoliberalisme aangemoedigde consumptiekapitalisme, de evolutionair opgelegde maar emotioneel onbevredigende drang naar seks, de terreur van het woke-isme, enz. Op tijd en stond zijn er ook weer drammerige en ranzige passages. Alleen: allemaal veel spaarzamer en over minder pagina’s gespreid dan in zijn vorige romans.
Houellebecq misleidt de lezer door in het begin nogal te focussen op terroristische bedreigingen en aanslagen die opduiken (het verhaal speelt zich af in 2027), en op de nakende presidentsverkiezingen in Frankrijk. Zijn hoofdpersonage, Paul Raison (de familienaam is significant), komt uit een afdeling van de Franse geheime diensten en is een nauwe medewerker van één van de machtigste mannen in Frankrijk. Best interessant, maar in de loop van de roman verdwijnt dit helemaal uit beeld, zonder toelichting. Geleidelijk aan – telkens gecentreerd rond protagonist Paul – verschuift de aandacht de permanente reflecties van Paul over familiebanden, relaties, literatuur, religie en uiteindelijk ook de dood. De roman eindigt zelfs tamelijk melodramatisch met de impliciete boodschap dat liefde alles overwint.
Dat is toch wel slikken. Zeker op het einde heb je de indruk een liefdesverhaal te lezen, en een redelijk aardig zelfs. Is dit nog wel een echte Houellebecq? Oneindig veel inkt is al gespendeerd aan hoe we dit nu precies moeten inschatten. Al in zijn vorige romans was subtiel een verschuiving merkbaar naar een iets mildere opstelling en het tonen van een zachter kantje. Is de schrijver op zijn oude dag een sentimentele dwaas geworden? Misschien. De voor mij meest bevredigende klaring las ik bij één van mijn gewaardeerde Goodreadsvrienden, Violeta: volgens haar is Houellebecq in de grond een romanticus-oude stijl, die worstelt met de wanhoop die eigen is aan de Westerse manier van leven. Benieuwd hoe dit gaat aflopen. ( )

Houellebecq seems to be the master of a kind of literature of the intrusive thought - sensations or ideas that come to you in spite of yourself, filling you with disgust at the ingenuity of your darker nature. He knows that underneath of every part of modern life there lurks something uncanny, fearful, disgusting, and a big part of what makes this book politically transgressive is his readiness to acknowledge these aspects, even dwell on them at length. If you are of a certain bent, reading the great pessimists (among whom Houellebecq certainly deserves a place) is to feel like you are finally seeing things as they actually are - this simple act of truth-telling is in total opposition to the modern, liberal conceptions of progress, optimism, and technocracy, where every dark thought is to be excised, every pathology treated, every imperfection sanded down or else covered with some obscuring decoration.

Of course this critique is only applicable to the comfortable, western lifestyle led by the characters in this book. Houellebecq is showing us that we shouldn’t see this kind of life as a culmination of history as it has so often been depicted as. Sure, for certain among us our lives are more comfortable than ever, but this trajectory has brought with it a kind of annihilation of the spirit that leaves us less and less prepared for the ultimate travail - dying. The central irony of this book is that Paul is surrounded from the first page with violence, death, and decay. And yet these circumstances, divorced of any framing ideology or belief system, merely happen and pass by, leaving him strangely cold. All of life should be a preparation for death, with each scrape with mortality that spares us our own life being a reminder, a kind of rehearsal. Yet we as a society push death further and further into the recesses of existence, when it should really be in the center at all times. The merveilleux mensonges in the last line of the book are not dissimulations; they are rather necessary coping mechanisms for facing something as inconceivable as death directly in its craw.

This is a strange book. It’s overlong and overwrought. Each of its individual narrative strands is interesting and weighty in its own right, and there is a thriller aspect that reappears every hundred pages or so that mimics quite well how grand historical events punctuate our private lives in ways that make your forget that history has been carrying on all along. We are at the end of the book, left with a big non-result, scratching our heads at the significance of what we have just read. This can be frustrating when you are looking for the narrative closure of novel - I think back to my experience reading Murakami when I was younger, entranced by the strange stories he was weaving only to find myself at the end of book and everything that had seemed so significant before evaporate into nothing but ornamentation. Houellebecq, however, is a very different writer, one that I would say is as *in* the world as any major artist working today. If the ending to this book feels abrupt, chopped off, unfinished, it’s because we are positively doomed to the same fate. None of us, however we’ll we think we are prepared, will live long enough to see the end of the stories that make up our lives. ( )

Verschillende plotlijnen met een open einde; enkel de dood is eindig.
In dit boek komen heel wat zaken aan bod die zich momenteel al duidelijk aankondigen maar de auteur laat het aan de lezer over om de mogelijke afloop of evolutie in te schatten...
De politiek verantwoordelijken worden hier in een Frans kader geschetst maar zijn slechts een kleine spiegeling van wat in de wereld der vooraanstaande beleidsvoerders en belangrijke (veiligheids-)organen in de Westerse landen gebeurt....
De auteur biedt een aantal thema's (vergrijzing met een maatschappelijke ‘internering’, aanslagen, complottheorieën, cyberdreigingen, politieke achtergronden en eigenbelang, de ego’ in de hogere maatschappelijke lagen…èn de uiteindelijke lotsbestemming van ieder individu….) ter overweging waarin dan toch heel zeker de kracht van dit boek schuilt. Zeker niet langdradig wanneer de lezer met meer aandacht zich in dit boek wil verdiepen. De rest is in dit boek is geromantiseerd. ( )
