I devoured (!!) this little book in 2 nights. Now I must buy copies for some foodie friends I know (mine was from the library). Well written, and perfectly captures the tone of a time and world with kind remembrance, yet pulls no punches as to the shadows of those years. Very creative use of POV. This book falls into the category of food for your soul. A beautifully told story, mostly through letters, between two female friends. Be forewarned, food plays a major player in the book and you’ll be starving by the time you finish the book. Luckily it’s short enough to knock off the novel in less than three hours, giving you the ability try one of the delicious recipes on the same day Love & Saffron, a novel written by Kim Fay, explores the lives of Joan and Imogen. These two women start corresponding in the early sixties, and their relationship soon develops into a true friendship. They confide in each other via letter, sharing secrets, personal failures and achievements. It sounds simple enough, and yet it isn’t. HTML:The Instant National Bestseller and #1 Indie Next Pick In the vein of the classic 84, Charing Cross Road, this witty and tender novel follows two women in 1960s America as they discover that food really does connect us all, and that friendship and laughter are the best medicine. When twenty-seven-year-old Joan Bergstrom sends a fan letterâ??as well as a gift of saffronâ??to fifty-nine-year-old Imogen Fortier, a life-changing friendship begins. Joan lives in Los Angeles and is just starting out as a writer for the newspaper food pages. Imogen lives on Camano Island outside Seattle, writing a monthly column for a Pacific Northwest magazine, and while she can hunt elk and dig for clams, sheâ??s never tasted fresh garlicâ??exotic fare in the Northwest of the sixties. As the two women commune through their letters, they build a closeness that sustains them through the Cuban Missile Crisis, the assassination of President Kennedy, and the unexpected in their own lives. Food and a good lifeâ??they canâ??t be separated. It is a discovery the women share, not only with each other, but with the men in their lives. Because of her correspondence with Joan, Imogenâ??s decades-long marriage blossoms into something new and exciting, and in turn, Joan learns that true love does not always come in the form we expect it to. Into this beautiful, intimate world comes the ultimate test of Joan and Imogenâ??s friendshipâ??a test that summons their unconditional trust in each other. A brief respite from our chaotic world, Love & Saffron is a gem of a novel, a reminder that food and friendship are the antidote to most any heartache, and that human connection wil Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

Admittedly, I had to pause fairly early in the reading, since I'd gotten started on an empty stomach. Not a good idea in light of all the inviting descriptions of dishes in this book.
After my pause for a snack, though, I didn't want to stop reading. The pleasant and relaxing experience of watching Joan and Imogen's friendship unfold in their earlier months would have been enough for me. But then my experience deepened as the two friends gradually opened up about their personal dilemmas, pain, and fears.
It isn't that common for stories that go to such difficult places to leave me as uplifted as this book has.
Yes, I believe the "read in one sitting" length works wonderfully for this story. Without dragging, wallowing, or going around in circles, the novel simply does what it needs to do. With warmth. With poignancy. And with lovable aspects that remain just that, rather than becoming saccharine.
Plus, the colorful nature of the cuisine, combined with the empathetic nature of the characters, makes the multicultural theme a natural fit in the story.
My goodness. What a substantive and beautiful dish this novel is. (
