'Gripping, terrifying and hilarious - John Niven is our Hunter S. Thompson.' ADAM KAY, author of This Is Going to Hurt _____________________________ You're terminally ill. Who do you kill? Set in a near-future America, an America that has borne two terms of a Trump Presidency and is now in the first term of Donald's daughter as president, Frank Brill, a retired small-town newspaper editor, lives in a world where the populist policies Trump is currently so keen to pursue have been a reality for some years and are getting even more extreme - an erosion of abortion rights, less and less gun control, xenophobic immigration policies. Frank, a good man, has just been given a terminal diagnosis. Rather than compile a bucket list of all the things he's ever wanted to do in his life, he instead has at the ready his 'fuck-it list'. Because Frank has had to endure more than his fair share of personal misfortune. And he has the names of those who are to blame for all of the tragedies that have befallen him. But eventually, as he becomes more accustomed to dishing out cold revenge and the stakes get higher and higher, and with a rogue county sheriff on his tail, there only remains one name left at the bottom of his fuck-it list. Part political satire, part compulsive thriller, The F*ck-it List is John Niven at his coruscating best. _____________________________ 'It's F**KING TERRIFYING and brilliant and gripping and tragic and humane. Such a well-written book, with such vivid efficient prose, a powerful political plea disguised as a revenge novel. It's brilliant.' MARIAN KEYES… (altro)

Can you do that? Write a novel with real names thrown in (of people who actually get killed) without getting sued? In America? With Trump at the receiving end? Be that as it may, I'm glad Niven did. This (only half-fictional) dystopia of a disintegrating U.S. of two socio-political camps with no more intersecting points ofl agreement suffering from the effects of Trumpism that jammed a wedge between conservsatives and liberals is much closer to the truth and present than the fictional frame and setting five years from now might suggest.
The gory details and the humour are good old conventional witty Niven, but the general chords he strikes in the wake of this road trip are very thoughtful. Frank, the protagonist, is shallow and non-descript, and Niven makes no effort to make him any more interesting. He's right. The book isn't about him, it's about the world he's glad to be leaving. He is just the guide who shows us around this messed-up country.

Sad to say - as a huge John Niven fan - that this was quite a disappointment. Cliched plot, surprisingly one dimensional main character and very predictable. A small touch of satire on the future state of America; but from Niven, this was possibly the most heartbreaking -from the man who wrote 'kill em all' and 'second coming' this was so weak.
Having re-read Straight White Male the other month, I was reminded of just how good an author he could be. I'll forgive him this one but his next better return to previous levels .... ( )
