This book is a treat beyond the just expectations of pleasure deserved, and simply to hold it is a thrill less only than the first smile of a new romance. John Piper's book 'Brighton Aquatints' was originally published in November 1939 as views of the Regency buildings with his own comments, in the manner of eighteenth century picture books of romantic tours. It is reproduced here full size in a largish horizontal book, but now with more than a hundred thick pages, with an introduction that tells everything that needs to be known. It has quite amazing beauty of detail, even to the texture of the original aquatints. This would be excellent enough, but it has two other wonders. One of them Alan Powers' complete history of this rather weird venture, ... And the other, best of all, delivered by Brian Webb's design, is the total sympathy of every page to the sprit of Piper. This runs through all details, typefaces, layout, quality of print, margins, variety and decorations, to become exactly, and very rarely, just the kind of book that he might have produced as a review of his own.
"Originally published in late 1939, John Pipers Brighton Aquatints celebrated some of the seaside resorts most iconic architecture, from the Royal Pavilion and West Pier to its stuccoed terraces and Victorian churches. The volume was the only proper artists book created by Piper and, with its unique use of the aquatint medium throughout, a pivotal work of its time. With help from John Betjeman, Piper hand-coloured 55 special copies of the edition of 250. This new edition brings Pipers monochrome and coloured prints together for the first time, alongside his quirky descriptions of the scenes. Alan Powers provides an additional commentary on each plate and an introduction exploring the books conception and production."--Publisher's description Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
