One million years of evolution didn't change our nature. Nor did it bury the horrors predating civilisation. Ancient rites, old deities and savage ways can reappear in the places you least expect. Lifestyle journalist Katrine escaped past traumas by moving to a coast renowned for seaside holidays and natural beauty. But when a vast hoard of human remains and prehistoric artefacts is discovered in nearby Brickburgh, a hideous shadow engulfs her life. Helene, a disillusioned lone parent, lost her brother, Lincoln, six years ago. Disturbing subterranean noises he recorded prior to vanishing, draw her to Brickburgh's caves. A site where early humans butchered each other across sixty thousand years. Upon the walls, images of their nameless gods remain. Amidst rumours of drug plantations and new sightings of the mythical red folk, it also appears that the inquisitive have been disappearing from this remote part of the world for years. A rural idyll where outsiders are unwelcome and where an infernal power is believed to linger beneath the earth. A timeless supernormal influence that only the desperate would dream of confronting. But to save themselves and those they love, and to thwart a crimson tide of pitiless barbarity, Kat and Helene are given no choice. They were involved and condemned before they knew it.… (altro)

A great and immersive story for people interested in folk-horror with a twist at the end. I gave it 4 stars because of the author's style. I think the long and detailed descriptions of every single scene just make the reading harder. While many times descriptions really help with the story, I found that there were many in this book that were not really needed and which only purpose was to delay the action and build more suspense. I think this book is going to make a great movie. ( )

Another very intriguing, encapturimg effort from one of the masters of modern folk horror revival. An investigation into a series of caves leads back to a nightmare from the Neolithic age of not earlier. Frightening, gripping and violent, this is not for the faint hearted. Good atmosphere and world building. ( )

Having read and re-read 'The Ritual' by the same author (and absolutely loved it), I pre-ordered 'The Reddening' without knowing much about it. I avoided reviews and spoilers and just had some notion about Archaeological digs and ancient somethings rising up.

The Novel starts with a few vignettes from the area in south Devon where the story is set. Then once it's firmly established in our heads that the Devon of this novel is definitely weird, we meet our two protagonists Katrine and Helene. They are both drawn into the plot by happenstance. Two very different women with little in common other than the trouble about to befall them.

Nevill's writing is superb both when describing the otherworldly stark beauty of the southern coastline of England, and the numbing mundanity of loneliness.

This book does not plod along. It's a horror. Bad things happen and they don't stop happening. When the wheels come off, they truly come off for all concerned. I don't want to give any particulars so you can enjoy the surprises as much as I did.

I'll be wading through Mr Nevill's back catalogue shortly. ( )

Folk Horror is having a moment right now with the success of movies like "Midsommer". But with Nevill's "The Reddening" we have a full blown world to dive into, and it is terrifying. It's also terrifyingly well written; some of the most atmospheric prose I've read in a while. ( )
