I'm conflicted, because I side with Alan Moore in his disagreements and mistreatment at the hands of DC. But this is just sitting there at the library...and it is better than the Before Watchmen titles I read a while back. It looks good and captures some of the feel of the pacing and layout of the original series. The Mime and Marionette are quite interesting villains, and I like their interaction with the Joker. And yet, every other time a DCU character shares a scene with a Watchmen character it is jarring and awkward. Still, I'm intrigued enough to pick up Part 2. I'll just feel a little bad about myself when I do. This is really a 4.5 not quite a 5, but I am super excited to see how this Watchmen spin-off turns out. This volume sets the scene and introduces a lot of new characters and their backstories. There are a few pretty big surprises (I won't ruin them for you, but they involve characters from the original Watchmen series) and I loved that Batman, Superman, Lex Luther and the Joker (as well as many other DC villains) play a pretty big part in this new series. Doomsday Clock picks up seven years after Watchmen ended, only now everyone knows that Adrian Veidt was the one responsible for the murder of millions. Since that bombshell broke the world is on the brink of of imploding... again. It's up to Veidt and Rorschach (or someone appearing to be Rorschach) to do something about it. I loved it and I can't wait to keep reading this series!! That was weird. But, maybe I'm just coming at it from a weird place since I've never thought that the Watchmen comic was the be all and end all of graphic novels. In this, some of the people from the Watchmen universe come over to the DC Superhero main universe and a lot of chaos ensues. Mostly everyone is looking for the blug guy, Dr. Manhattan. It was an okay story. A little hard for me to follow in places, but, again, that could have been because of my ambivalence about the Watchmen series. Still, it's an interesting start (since it's only part one) to bring Watchmen and DC together. This book definitely attempts to capture the look, feel, and plotting of Watchmen, and does some of it well. However, I often found myself wondering where I was in the story, and what was going on.
I will probably read the second part when it comes out.
The artwork is well done and adds to the story - expressions and dilemma seem to be done well to me. ( )
