On a cold day deep in the heart of winter, Rowan's father returns from an ill-fated hunting trip bearing a single, white rose. The rose is followed by the Huntress, a figure out of legend. Tall, cruel, and achingly beautiful, she brings Rowan back with her to a mountain fastness populated solely by the creatures of the hunt. Rowan, who once scorned the villagers for their superstitions, now finds herself at the heart of a curse with roots as deep as the mountains, ruled by an old magic that is as insidious as the touch of the winter rose. Torn between her family loyalties, her guilty relief at escaping her betrothal to the charming but arrogant Avery Lockland, and her complicated feelings for the Huntress, Rowan must find a way to break the curse before it destroys everything she loves. There is only one problem-if she can find a way to lift the curse, she will have to return to the life she left behind. And the only thing more unbearable than endless winter is facing a lifetime of springs without the Huntress.… (altro)

This was a really interesting take on a beauty and the beast retelling. I love fairy tale retellings that have something new to say, and reframing fairy tales to show queer love where it has so often not been is a lovely one. I really enjoyed the twists on the “beast” and the curse and the winter imagery! I found the romance the tiiiiinest bit lacking, but only in the same sense that is found in many fairy tales—it happens quickly. Overall, I enjoyed this quite a bit and I’ll keep an eye out for other titles by this author! ( )

4.5/5 I love retellings, especially Beauty and the Beast ones!

This was one of the darker retellings I've read. I liked the progression of Rowan and the Huntress's relationship. It was pretty slow burn and the intimacy between them was pretty minimal. The story and plot was pretty slow until the ending where it kind of felt rushed ( )

2020-02-28: Pretty sure I commented on this but don't see it.

It was good enough that I was surprised that only a few other LTers have it. Apparently it was marketed as a lesbian story, which is unfortunate because it really wasn't. It was a fairy tale and a pretty good one, where the love interests happened to both be female.

Copying my comments to Review in the hopes that someone who likes fairy tales will find it. ( )
