At the news of her mother's death, Natalie Tan returns home. The two women hadn't spoken since Natalie left in anger seven years ago, when her mother refused to support her chosen career as a chef. Natalie is shocked to discover the vibrant neighborhood of San Francisco's Chinatown that she remembers from her childhood is fading, with businesses failing and families moving out. She's even more surprised to learn she has inherited her grandmother's restaurant. The neighborhood seer reads the restaurant's fortune in the leaves: Natalie must cook three recipes from her grandmother's cookbook to aid her struggling neighbors before the restaurant will succeed. Unfortunately, Natalie has no desire to help them try to turn things around--she resents the local shopkeepers for leaving her alone to take care of her agoraphobic mother when she was growing up. But with the support of a surprising new friend and a budding romance, Natalie starts to realize that maybe her neighbors really have been there for her all along.… (altro)

I should have liked this more than I actually did.

Recipes, quirky neighbors, a hint of magic but not too much. Instead it felt repetitive and some of the writing felt really forced and awkward. I enjoyed learning a little bit about Chinese culture but mostly I just felt disappointed. ( )

A touch of Chinese magic makes this complicated mother daughter relationship tale special. ( )

There’s a lot going on in this book: magical realism, recipes, mental health, Chinese culture. 2.5 stars
At times, the timing of events in a day were impossible. Too many things crammed in too little time always bothers me. ( )

A fun book. Liked the food and people ( )

Overall, a good piece of magical realism. There were some things that came about too easily, and early on I was worried that it was going to become a strictly romance book. Roselle Lim did a good job balancing both elements. The pacing was a little slow for my tastes, but the descriptions of food were tantalizing. Some of the narration got redundant. But, there was a twist at the end I wasn't expecting (mostly because I kept forgetting about the mystery, by no fault of the author). Overall, a good read. It won't go down as one of my favorites of all time, but I'm glad I read it and would recommend it to others. ( )
