It skips around chronologically and the chapters are named a bit generically by the year and a character name. My player only tells me how far into a chapter I am, not how far into the book, so if I lost my place and needed to go back, I had a dickens of a time figuring out where I'd left off. This also got confusing because it asks you to figure out who is who in terms of familial relationships. But in the end, I had all that figured out, liked the narrator, Kristin Kalbli, well enough, and had overall enjoyed the story. ( ) I finished this book several days ago, and I am already having trouble recalling what I liked and did not like when I was reading it. Perhaps that is because I have been working very late at work lately, and consequently read the book in shorter sessions over a longer period. The story kept me interested. Oddly, I found I did not get any real sense of the main character, who is the story’s narrator. What I did get from Ms. Williams, though, was a keen sense of place, of certain cultural norms and divisions in a small community, and particularly in a seasonal place like a seaside town or, as here, an island. The story is presented in two different time frames, 1951 and 1969, and the climactic event, of which we know the outcome from the beginning, is nevertheless peeled away in tighter spirals shifting forward and back. That device worked well in this story; I am usually annoyed with it when employed for no apparent reason. Awesome Historical Fiction! Spanning 4 decades the story takes you back to 1930's on Winthrop Island, the Portuguese families that inhabit the island year round and the Neuvo Riche that vacation there every summer. The class divide is wide but not as wide as they would like you to think. A bit reminiscent of The Great Gatsby with its lavish parties and rich people. A touch of Rebecca (Daphne DeMaurier) where the house itself plays a role in the story. And a dash of Grey Gardens, with its old spinsters living in the once magnificent home, trying to hold onto a shred of their once lavish lifestyle. Beautifully written and suspenseful enough to hold your interest. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

HTML: New York Times bestselling author Beatriz Williams brings us the blockbuster novel of the seasonâ??an electrifying postwar fable of love, class, power, and redemption set among the inhabitants of an island off the New England coast . . . In the summer of 1951, Miranda Schuyler arrives on elite, secretive Winthrop Island as a schoolgirl from the margins of high society, still reeling from the loss of her father in the Second World War. When her beautiful mother marries Hugh Fisher, whose summer house on Winthrop overlooks the famous lighthouse, Miranda's catapulted into a heady new world of pedigrees and cocktails, status and swimming pools. Isobel Fisher, Miranda's new stepsisterâ??all long legs and world-weary bravado, engaged to a wealthy Island scionâ??is eager to draw Miranda into the arcane customs of Winthrop society. But beneath the island's patrician surface, there are really two clans: the summer families with their steadfast ways and quiet obsessions, and the working class of Portuguese fishermen and domestic workers who earn their living on the water and in the laundries of the summer houses. Uneasy among Isobel's privileged friends, Miranda finds herself drawn to Joseph Vargas, whose father keeps the lighthouse with his mysterious wife. In summer, Joseph helps his father in the lobster boats, but in the autumn he returns to Brown University, where he's determined to make something of himself. Since childhood, Joseph's enjoyed an intense, complex friendship with Isobel Fisher, and as the summer winds to its end, Miranda's caught in a catastrophe that will shatter Winthrop's hard-won tranquility and banish Miranda from the island for nearly two decades. Now, in the landmark summer of 1969, Miranda returns at last, as a renowned Shakespearean actress hiding a terrible heartbreak. On its surface, the Island remains the sameâ??determined to keep the outside world from its shores, fiercely loyal to those who belong. But the formerly powerful Fisher family is a shadow of itself, and Joseph Vargas has recently escaped the prison where he was incarcerated for the murder of Miranda's stepfather eighteen years earlier. What's more, Miranda herself is no longer a naïve teenager, and she begins a fierce, inexorable quest for justice for the man she once loved . . . even if it means uncovering every last one of the secrets that bind together the families of Winthro Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
