Excerpt from Marie-Louise Et le Duc de ReichstadtMany years devoted to teaching have demonstrated to me how important it is to familiarize students of French with the principal idioms of that language. My experience has been that in the comparatively small amount of French read by the average college graduate, these idioms recur at too wide intervals to make as lasting an impression as is desirable.In the following pages, I have, therefore, striven to repeat, as frequently as possible, the most common idioms, conjunctions, and adverbial expressions. Al though I am fully aware of the fact that the reiterated use of the same terms is a literary blemish, I have resorted to it for pedagogical reasons, taking due care, however, to make these repetitions so unobtrusive as not to detract in any way from the interest of the narrative.In writing my Empresses of France (messrs. Dodd, Mead many historical and biographical works were consulted, and contemporary newspapers, poems, letters and memoirs carefully studied.
