hen They Call You a Terrorist by Patrisse Khan-Cullors & asha bandele is the essential audiobook for every conscientious American.
From one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement comes a poetic audiobook memoir and reflection on humanity. Necessary and timely, Patrisse Cullors' story asks us to remember that protest in the interest of the most vulnerable comes from love. Leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement have been called terrorists, a threat to America. But in truth, they are loving women whose life experiences have led them to seek justice for those victimized by the powerful. In this meaningful, empowering account of survival, strength, and resilience, Patrisse Cullors and asha bandele seek to change the culture that declares innocent black life expendable.
More praise for When They Call You a Terrorist:

"This remarkable book reveals what inspired Patrisse's visionary and courageous activism and forces us to face the consequence of the choices our nation made when we criminalized a generation. This book is a must-read for all of us." - Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow
"Steeped in humanity and powerful prose...This is an eye-opening and eloquent coming-of-age story from one of the leaders in the new generation of social activists." — Publishers Weekly
"'When They Call You a Terrorist'...help[s] readers understand what it means to be a black woman in the United States today." — New York Times Book Review

I am feeling the true importance of pairing a memoir with other non fiction on a topic. This book gave my reading of The New Jim Crow more depth and personal struggle with the realities of a criminal justice system that more strongly effects black boys and men and the mentally ill. ( )

Great read. Patrisse Khan-Cullors' memoir is heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. Cullors is a compelling writer, making this book hard to put down. ( )

This is a powerful, eye-opening, must-read about racism, homophobia, and our dangerous prison system (and so much more). Highly recommended. We can't fix our problems until we more thoroughly understand what's really happening in America. ( )

It's heartbreaking and maddening to read about the things that have happened to one person, one family, as it always is. I appreciate the chance to read and process this context. There's always so much more to learn. ( )

This book was an excellent read and even more powerful than I expected. Hearing her life story and all that led to her activism was extraordinary. I am in awe of her passion for upholding the marginalized communities of color. It is such important work but heartbreaking work and even dangerous work when going against the status quo. The title of the book gives you an idea of what they are up against but it is not only a fight worth fighting but also one that is paramount for making our country the country it should be. ( )
