"In this elegant and action-packed stand-alone sequel to the international bestselling thrillers The Swimmer and The Believer, fierce heroine Klara Walldeen must save her dearest friend Gabriella and maneuver the politics of a Swedish diplomat--while also falling in love. November 2015. Klara Walldeen returns to the Stockholm archipelago to bury her beloved grandfather, her best friend Gabriella by her side. What should be a trip of mourning and solitude quickly turns perilous when Gabi is arrested under suspicion of terrorist activity. After finding notes in Gabi's purse about a clandestine meeting with a young Swedish diplomat, Klara springs into action, determined to clear her friend's name, and find out whatever clandestine and dangerous workings she has gotten herself into. Meanwhile, Jacob Seger, a young aspiring diplomat, arrives in Lebanon ready to embrace his future, starting with an internship at the Swedish embassy in Beirut. On his first night, he meets the handsome and mysterious Yassim. Their relationship quickly ignites into a passionate, obsessive affair that renders everything else in Jacob's life insignificant. But when terrorist claims against Yassim are brought to light, Jacob is faced with an impossible decision, and must soon confront his role in a complicated game he is wholly unprepared to play. Following Gabi's trail, Klara comes face-to-face with Jacob, whom Gabi was trying to help, as well as George Loow, a suave lobbyist from her past to whom she finds herself inexorably drawn to. Now Klara, George, and Jacob set off on a race across Europe to stop a pending terrorist attack--and get to the bottom of Yassim's true identity. Once again, Joakim Zander spins an intricate tale of deception and suspense in a brilliant thriller that will leave readers utterly enthralled"--… (altro)

Turns out to be a better story than I first thought it would. Jacob/Matti is one of the weakest characters I have ever read in a book. His survival is a big part of the story and makes the book quite exceptional even though he's not really that likeable. Klara and George's story is endearing. I do like this author and will read the book written between this one and "The Swimmer", which was excellent. ( )

With so many international intrigue books on the market today, it can be hard to stand out in the field. I think Zander does just that with his trilogy, so far, of books featuring Klara Walldéen. ( )

The Friend is a prime example of why I argue that It is important to finish books you start. This is the final entry in a trilogy that started with the Swimmer. I'll warn you this book is very Scandanavian and it's center is a gay relationship that the author writes about in the same language as one would about a hetrosexual relationship. There are quite graphic scenes. That while I believe that they are essential to the story, they almost led to me abandoning thebook in the beginning.

At it's heart The Friend is a thriller in the vein of LeCarre or Ludlum. It's a story that involves the Middle East, Europe, terrorists, and terror plots. The difference between this book and the classic thrillers is that the protagonists behaveb as real peopl would. Much of the time they are petrified with fear and doubt. Only through heroic efforts do they make it to the next step. There are no marksman, super sleuths,or martial arts experts in this story. Just ordinary citizens caughgt up in acts in a shadow world that has encroached upon their own.

I recommend that you start this one, and you finish it. The Friend may not hook you from the get go, but it'll provide a very solid ride if you let it. ( )

Review: The Friend by Joakim Zander.

Another Early Reviewer’s book filled with suspense and deception. The story was well written, creative characters and an environment of turmoil. The setting is Lebanon where Jacob Seger, an International student wants to take his internship in the Swedish Embassy in Beirut. The reader is also introduced to Klara Walldeen whose grandfather has died and she returns with her friend Gabi to Stockholm to mourn his demise.

As the story unfolds into two sub-plots the action begins with Gabi’s disappearance after being arrested by a SWAT team under suspicion of terrorist activity. Klara saw the whole event go down in front of Gabi’s law firm but at the time she didn’t know what was really going on but she is clear about what she has to do. This is where Klara gets involved with a Swedish diplomat to save her friend.

Meanwhile, on Jacob’s first night in Lebanon he goes to a party and meets Yassim, known as a photographer covering his true colors as a terrorist and passionately falls in love. After a few secretive meetings together Jacob heard rumors about Yassim being a terrorist. His thoughts keep telling him not to believe anyone but he already had some questions about their relationship and not sure what his future held for him. Soon Jacob has an impossible decision to make challenging his position in a complicated game he was totally unprepared to play…

In time Jacob and Klara meet and become wrapped up in a global conspiracy involving feuding countries, international spying and looming terrorist attacks. ( )
