A beautifully heartfelt story about one boy's journey toward acceptance. A book that Jill Soloway, the award-winning creator of Transparent, called "a terrific read for all ages" and Ami Polonsky, author of Gracefully Grayson, called "an emotionally complex and achingly real read." Twelve-year-old Shane Woods is just a regular boy. He loves pitching for his baseball team, working on his graphic novel, and hanging out with his best friend, Josh. But Shane is keeping something private, something that might make a difference to his friends and teammates, even Josh. And when a classmate threatens to reveal his secret, Shane's whole world comes crashing down. It will take a lot of courage for Shane to ignore the hate and show the world that he's still the same boy he was before. And in the end, those who stand beside him may surprise everyone, including Shane.… (altro)

This book is well done. It will be helpful for teens and families. ( )

Great book -- hard to put down. Shane is a young baseball playing middle school student, with a new crush on a girl, a solid best friend, and one parent who really gets him. Unfortunately, his Dad doesn't get him in the same way, and between that negotiation and a crisis with a bully, Shane is effectively outed as trans. Well written, with a lot of realistic feeling, emotions and events. I loved that the school administrators and staff were immediate and unflinching support, even though there's a limit to what adults can do. I also loved the ways Shane's mom supported him. Altogether a good book and quick read. ( )

This is one of my all time favorite books when it comes to Transgender representation! M.G. Hennessy has done amazing things in this book to cause and bring out many different emotions! I loved every second of reading this gem! ( )

middlegrade realistic fiction about being a transgender kid (4th-9th grades). Appreciated this one a lot (for all the trans kids out there, and their friends and families!). If only I could get more folks to read it... ( )

Solid realistic fiction about a trans boy, the first I’ve read that doesn’t center on the initial family coming-out story. Goes down easy; similar reading level to George. Very binary gender ideas, very white suburban “normalcy” — both of which make this feel too Problem Novel for me to give it more than 3 stars. There’s one super icky scene, too, in which protagonist Shane narrates how his Chinese-American best friend’s lunch “reeks.” Josh claims to prefer Shane’s lunch too, and the text doesn’t challenge this racism at all; it’s just funny, a normal boy making fun of his friend’s not-quite-normal lunch.
