In 1145 A.D., as foretold by Merlin, fourteen-year-old Rosalind, who will be the twenty-first Pendragon Queen of Wilde Island, has much to accomplish to fulfill her destiny, while hiding from her people the dragon's claw she was born with that reflects only one of her mother's dark secrets.

I wanted to like this book, and indeed there were several bits that felt like they were hinting at some greater mythology. Unfortunately, that's most of what happened: hinting and not actual explaining. What's the backstory of the prophecy? What was the nature of the wars between the dragons and the humans? We never really find out.

Characterization felt a bit spotty, too. Probably the most egregious example is between Rosalind and Kit, who pretty much become best friends immediately with no real explanation. It felt artificial.

Shame, because I really love dragons. The part with the dragons was probably the strongest part of the book. I wish that had lasted longer. ( )

This book is very cute. You will enjoy it if you like a good classic style fairy tale. It's a little mundane if you are looking for something new. ( )

It has been a while. I remember that it was a riveting book, that I couldn't put down. But I also know that it had some questionable things in it. . . It was rather dark. Definitely for teens. ( )

Although the premise behind this book is appealing (a princess born with a dragon’s claw instead of a finger seeks a cure before she marries and becomes queen), the abruptness of several pivotal plot points mars the story, making it difficult to follow and maintain as believable. The sudden change in Lord Faul’s character is too abrupt and sudden to be believable. Similarly, many of the characters seem flat and undeveloped. Rosalind’s mother is an intriguing character, though her stubbornness and overprotectiveness of Rosalind becomes tedious. I also found it difficult to believe all the shame and horror that was ascribed simply to Rosalind’s dragon claw.

I recommend Patricia C. Wrede’s dragon series for readers looking for books combining princesses and dragons. ( )

I did not think it was boring like some reviews had said. Dragon Keep have a dazzling of words, like the sun shining high above the water. Janet Carey knows how to put words and emotions together. I was really tick off with the which trial. Can`t stand how it was back then, how people accuse each other of whichcraft. I love how there some medieval history woven to the story. I love any story that has a bit of history and culture in adding more to the story. ( )
