Rocky Rhodes, Maine. As a fierce snowstorm descends upon the sleepy little town, a Good Samaritan stops to help a catatonic woman sitting in the middle of the icy road, and is never seen or heard from again. When the police find his car, it is splattered in more blood than the human body can hold. While the storm rages on, the wave of disappearances continue, the victims sharing only one commonality: they are all male. Now it's up to three young women to figure out who or what is responsible: a forensic chemist, a waitress struggling with an abusive boyfriend, and a gamer coping with the loss of her lover. Their search will lead them on a journey filled with unspeakable horrors that are all connected to a mysterious Woman in White.… (altro)

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I feel that the premise behind this story was good. The monster was original and interesting. Like some of my fellow reviewers, I feel that the blizzard atmosphere added quite a bit to the overall effect---I love stories in which weather (particularly snow) adds a level of isolation to a monster romp. The characters, however, felt to me to be pulled from the Book of Standard Monster Movie Characters---no surprises there. So much so that I didn’t really feel connection to any of them.
There also, in my opinion, was a lack of momentum and suspense in the telling that made the story one that I more or less slogged through to see how it ended, even though the creature was very interesting.

I give it a couple of points for a good monster and another point for the blizzard, but overall I only give this one three stars. ( )

The author has brought together the perfect pairing of horror and science fiction. We're treated to a mysterious woman in white...seemingly a ghost by the traditional standard. Turns out she is much more. It makes for a spooky story indeed.

The character development in this short novella is extraordinary. Each character had such depth, I could actually visualize them in my mind. Usually in a novella, or even a short story, it's over so quickly, there isn't time to feel anything for the characters. That's not true in this excellent little novel.

Frankly, I couldn't put it down. Dearborn has grabbed my attention with this one. I now plan to check out her past offerings, the novels Sacrifice Island and Trinity, and I look forward to her future work. Well done!

I really enjoyed the cold, harsh and stormy atmosphere of the Woman in White. The author has done a wonderful job. The descriptions of the scenery, the snowstorm and the environment really made this one stand out and resulted in an amazingly chilly backdrop that gave me the chills and had me reaching for my reading blanket.

I usually find character development to be somewhat lacking in many novellas but the balance here was just right. There was quite a few characters and they were all well rounded and interesting, each had just enough of a backstory to make them feel real and stand out as an individual. The pacing was consistent, the writing flowed well and the storyline had me engrossed from start to finish.

Woman in White has just the right mix of mystery, suspense, horror and gruesome scenes to appeal to all horror fans. I thoroughly enjoyed it would definitely recommend giving it a read. ( )

Although this is a short story it failed to make any real impression on me and I really struggled to finish. There is a mysterious and beautiful woman in white appearing in the cold cold winter in the small town of Rocky Rhodes Maine. Is there a connection between this strange apparition and a number of recent murders, all men? So we have a horror story set in small town America with faceless uninteresting characters, attempting to solve the mystery of something strange and huge that fell from the sky. What is the connection between this event, the woman in white and the grub-monster?

The one aspect of this story that I did like was the snowy setting which lends itself beautifully to the horror genre (hence the two stars) The stillness and quietness creates a strange and nervous landscape where anything could be hidden and everything is possible. Unfortunately the readers is subjected to the pettiness, quarrels and disagreements amongst the leading players, and the horror element when revealed is frankly laughable. I would however recommend Snowblind and Snowblind 2 by Michael McBride as perfect examples of a big scary monster against the background of a still and frozen landscape, and I reflect once again on the fact that there is really only one writer who could be truly described as the "king" of small town America.
