In nearly 90 pages of text, accompanied by unique notes and references to original documents, Mr. Chapman explodes this myth by describing hundreds of pre-1841 name lists (censuses, poll lists, national surveys, tax lists, parish enumerations, etc.), explaining most of them, as far as possible, in their historical framework. Preface The continuing demands for copies of this Cameo have offered an opportunity to revise the text and appendices and incorporate over 200 additional listings for Ireland in this fifth and yet larger edition.
1. 1841 - The Ultimate Census 1841 is regarded by many who are interested in British genealogical research as the beginning of an era - the first of the nineteenth century returns of use to the family historian. Names and occupations are quoted and ages given to the nearest five years (rounded downwards); the birthplace is stated as being within or outside the county of residence. Equally important, individuals are grouped together in households, each householder having filled in, probably with assistance, a separate schedule.
