This is an InstaRead Summary of Gone Girl: A Novel by Gillian Flynn. Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary: Part One: Boy Loses Girl Nick Dunne: The Day Of Nick lives in the suburbs of his hometown in Carthage, Missouri, near the Mississippi River. It's a conventional house that his wife, Amy, hates. Amy wanted to rent a house because she hoped that they wouldn't stay in Missouri for long. Nick was a writer for a magazine in New York for eleven years. Nick and Amy lost their jobs within three weeks of each other. They moved to Missouri when Nick's twin sister, Margo, informed him that their mother was dying. Today, Nick wakes up at six a.m., which is unusual for him because he usually wakes up at random times like 8:43 or 9:26. He can hear Amy making breakfast downstairs. It's their five year anniversary. While she cooks, Amy hums the theme to M.A.S.H., "Suicide is Painless." Nick walks down to the kitchen doorway, and watches as Amy cooks. When Amy sees him in the doorway, she says hello. Nick is filled with dread, but he pushes himself forward. Nick is running late for work. He and his sister own a bar, called The Bar, that they opened using Amy's eighty thousand dollars. This was all of the money that Amy had from her trust fund. Amy Elliott: January 8, 2005 (Diary Entry) Amy writes personality quizzes for a women's magazine. Her friend, Carmen, takes her to a writer's party. A handsome man tells Amy not to eat from the deli tray. The man looks like he's a womanizer. He tells her that there are three other edible things in the refrigerator, and he could make her an olive with mustard. She finds this funny. She imagines being with him a year from now, and having "an olive with mustard" as an inside joke. This man is Nick. Nick makes some bad puns, and refills Amy's drink. She likes his possessiveness. They share a taxi until a traffic jam forms, and then they get out and walk on the street. On the way to Amy's home, they kiss. Nick Dunne: The Day Of Nick enters The Bar. One customer and his sister, Margo, are there. Nick calls Margo 'Go'. Go is Nick's confidante, and they have a little bit of twin telepathy. Go sees his stress and gives him a couple of beers. She used to work in investment banking, until she was fired, and then moved back to Missouri. Nick and Go talk about Amy. Amy likes to do treasure hunts on her and Nick's anniversaries, in which the clues eventually lead up to Nick's present. For their first anniversary, Nick did horribly, and by the time he and Amy exchanged presents, she was no longer talking to him. Go and Amy do not like each other. While Nick...… (altro)
