Is it possible to lose weight fast and keep it off long-term? Whether it's a new diet, an exercise regimen, or surgery, people are always looking for the shortest path to their ideal weight. Bariatric surgery can help you get ahead of your weight issues, but it's not a one-and-done remedy; it gives you a head start, but lasting weight loss requires maintenance.Weight Loss Surgery: The Real Skinny tells you the truth. Bariatric surgery can be an excellent way to quickly lose weight, but it's not a permanent fix. It can change your body, but it doesn't change your mind or your relationship with food. As Dr. Nick Nicholson and B. A. Blackwood explain, "overeating has little to do with physical need and everything to do with emotional need." Surgery will get you started, but patients must also be willing to adopt a healthier way of living. While the authors touch on the benefits of bariatric surgery and practical advice on how to select your surgeon, much of this book addresses the issues connected to weight management that precede and follow surgery, with chapters that tackle questions like "How Did I End up in this Mess and Why Can't I Get Out of It?" and "I'm Doing Everything Right, So Why Doesn't My Weight Show It?"Other chapters address some of the unexpected consequences of dramatic weight loss. You may have already known that weight gain could adversely affect your relationships...but weight loss? Like any major life change, losing weight can upset the balance in your relationships. Weight Loss Surgery: The Real Skinny honestly acknowledges the effect that bariatric surgery can have on a patient and that patient's family and friends. The authors offer insight into how to prepare yourself and your loved ones for the shift, highlighting the importance of open communication throughout the process.Dr. Nick Nicholson, a renowned bariatric surgeon, and B. A. Blackwood, an author, retired trial lawyer, and marathon runner, teamed up to write Weight Loss Surgery: The Real Skinny, a guide for people who are considering or have already undergone bariatric surgery. Nicholson was voted one of D Magazine's top bariatric doctors seven years in a row, and Blackwood has completed more than 20 marathons. Together they share a passion for encouraging people to achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles. They know that anyone who chooses to undergo bariatric surgery will experience bumps in the road to maintaining their weight loss. One size does not fit all-everyone's body is unique and everyone faces a unique set of challenges. If you or a loved one is considering bariatric surgery or has already undergone surgery, Weight Loss Surgery: The Real Skinny can help you find and face the real issues that brought you to this place and lead you on the way to creating a new lifestyle that will preserve a healthier you. Written in an easy-to-read, engaging, and encouraging style that is supplemented with informational charts and data, this book shows readers how to take charge of their health by addressing their emotions and changing their thinking so they can maintain a healthy weight throughout their life.… (altro)

This informative and enlightening book, based on real-life patients under the care of Dr. Nicholson, is a must-read for any person considering bariatric surgery. Through anecdotes spoken by his patients, we gain insight not only of the different types of surgeries but also into the emotional upheaval that often follows such procedures. Depression and anger intermingle with the feelings of joy and accomplishment. The authors provide suggestions on coping strategies, affirmation, and encouragement for all patients embarking on this life-changing procedure. This little book is a gem!

I have several friends who have had weight loss surgery, both gastric bypass and lap band procedures. Weight loss surgery is an interesting subject to me. I chose this book so that I could better understand what they went through, and to see if it is something I could consider doing one day.

This book is a good resource for emotional support after weight loss surgery. It spends a lot of time on how the patient will feel and how their friends and family will react to their weight loss. It also stresses that weight loss is hard work even after surgery, and it can be difficult to keep the weight off long term.

I was surprised at how negative it could be though. Basically, this book says that there's a good chance you will lose your marriage after weight loss surgery, and maybe some of your close friends. It even discusses dating again after divorce. It would be interesting to see if statistics back up this claim - do the majority of people who have weight loss surgery get divorced after they lose weight? If that is truly the case, it would be a good idea to add the statistics and supporting documentation to this book.

I also thought that this book was lacking in information about the various types of weight loss surgeries. I know the focus was on emotional support, but I would have appreciated a quick introductory discussion of the various types of weight loss procedures. There was a procedure mentioned called a gastric sleeve, and that is not something I'm familiar with. ( )

Excellent Book! Well written and easy to comprehend with great examples and relevant topics to assist the post-bariatric patient. Many of the Weigh Loss Surgery books published deal with the physical side or the medical considerations of Bariatric surgery therefore leaving out one of the most important aspects that make a huge impact on the bariatric patient, emotional. As a Roun en Y graduate, I found the book extremely helpful and informative. I kept saying, "I felt that way" or "I've been through that myself". The perfect gift for the person who is considering this surgery. ( )

Informative but repetitive. The text goes into decent detail regarding the lead up to the decision and procedures to begin the weight loss surgery transformation. The quotes used throughout the text seem genuine, but lost their intended effect when reading the same quote across multiple chapters. I am currently 6 months into my pre op program, so much of the test was affirmations that I chose the right doctor and surgeon, but at my current stage (6 weeks from surgery date) I was hoping for information about post surgery with regards to typical heal times, dealing with the pre/post op liquid diets.

Overall: very informative for those beginning their journey to see if surgery is right for them.
Pro: short easy to read, and understandable language
Con: Those already in the "process" will have already done enough self research to learn much of the technical info

This would be a great resource to get into a Dr's office to give to starting patients to read and keep/return and reuse. ( )

I read this book because a relative is thinking about having this done, and I wanted to know more about what she should expect both physically and mentally. What surprised me the most was the way others may treat her after the surgery. Every patient must prepare for the actual surgery and especially post surgery, but will also need to be prepared for changes that may come from a spouse, family and friends. Not everyone will be thrilled with the changes and may even resent the person. Why anyone would be anything but thrilled that their loved one/friend is getting healthy is beyond me.

The life of anyone having this done will be changed forever (asumming they don’t go back to their old habits), and that can either be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on their own mindset. Being prepared is more than physical, the patient must also be mentally prepared for everything that comes with the surgery.

This was a quick read, very informative, easy to understand, and I think this would be a must read for anyone thinking about having weight loss surgery. ( )
