Une femme est violemment agressée lors d’un brigandage dans une galerie marchande parisienne. Le hasard veut qu’elle soit l’amante du commissaire Verhoeven. Le dernier volume de la série la boucle admirablement et tient le lecteur en haleine dans une intrigue particulièrement machiavélique. On peut cependant regretter, après la lecture de plusieurs romans policiers de l’auteur, s’attendre à un rebondissement inattendu, ce qui gâche un peu la surprise. La série n’en reste pas moins un plaisir, à lire dans l’ordre. ( )

In this follow-up to Alex Lemaitre has his dwarfish detective Camille Verhoeven embroiled in a brutal armed robbery. Camille has a relationship with a witness injured in the attack but he keeps this from his superiors and takes over the investigation, in breach of protocol. Predictably, he goes in boots and all and creates a world of headaches for himself and for the investigation.

This not a bad crime novel, but it is not a patch on Alex in terms of plot. This time around, Lemaitre's plot twists are pretty readily anticipated and he does himself no favours by turning his main character into a bit of an obnoxious jerk. I have not read Irene, which might be better, but Lemaitre has revealed so much of the plot of that book in the two sequels that I really don't think I'll bother.

This is a French detective trilogy and it centres on Camille Verhœven, who is a male dwarf detective. Yes you read that correctly.

These three books have a thread and they should be read in the order above.

How lovely to read something that is so French you can smell the coffee and Gauloise.

Very stylish and incredibly well written. The fact that main character is a dwarf is almost lost in these stories even though it is mentioned repeatedly it is not a cornerstone of the story, it more like a background detail. When they make the movies or more likely the Amazon/Netflix TV Series I am sure it will become a bigger issue which would be a shame because the stories do not need a prop to help them along.

I devoured these 3 books like the sharp tasting food that they were. It is a detective series so there are no surprises about what you are dealing with, only the way it all pans out.

If you like detective novels then you must read these. Simply brilliant. ( )

Es gibt einen brutalen Überfall auf ein Juweliergeschäft. Es ist kein guter Tag für Kommissar Camille Verhoeven, als er sich mit diesem Fall beschäftigen muss. Auf den Überwachungsbändern sieht er eine Frau, die schrecklich zugerichtet in die Kamera schaut. Doch es ist nicht irgendeine Frau, es ist Anne Forestier, die zur falschen Zeit am falschen Ort war und in diesen Überfall geraten ist, und diese Frau ist die Lebensgefährtin von Camille Verhoeven. Sie hat zu viel gesehen und kann die Täter identifizieren. Daher ist sie auch noch in Gefahr, als sie schwer verletzt im Krankhaus liegt. Der Kommissar will die Täter auf jeden Fall fassen, da er noch eine Rechnung mit ihnen offen hat, aber er will auch Anne schützen.

Dies ist mein erstes Buch von Pierre Lemaitre und mir gefällt sein nüchterner Schreibstil, der aber nicht ganz einfach zu lesen ist. Erst mit der Zeit entwickeln sich die Zusammenhänge und wie die einzelnen Figuren miteinander verbunden sind. Es gibt immer neue Wendungen, so dass bis zum Schluss alles offenbleibt. Doch dann zeigt sich das Ausmaß der Verwicklungen.

Das Schicksal hat Camille Verhoeven schon vorher gebeutelt und es wirft auch weiterhin Steine in den Weg. Genau das aber ist der Antrieb, der Camille durch diesen Fall bringt, wobei er Vorschriften außer Acht lässt und seinen nicht ganz geraden Weg geht. Aber seine zwiespältige Beziehung zu Anne wird erst mit der Zeit klarer. Niemand bei der Polizei weiß von Camilles Beziehung zu Anne, was es ihm ermöglicht, die Ermittlungen zu führen.
Die Charaktere sind interessant und authentisch.

Es ist eine komplexe Geschichte, die sich langsam entwickelt. Am Ende gibt es dann noch eine Wendung, die sowohl den Leser, als auch Camille Verhoeven alles mit einem neuen, überraschenden Blick betrachten lässt.

Ein ganz besonderer Thriller, der mir gut gefallen hat. ( )
