A fun book about needing to think outside of the box. Recommended to people who enjoy Ruby Redfort, Look Into My Eyes. ( )

I haven't met any kids yet that like this series. I'm a longtime Lauren Child fan, and I loooove Ruby Redfort. Cool spy gear, strange and snappy dialogue, bizarre sciencey stuff, and the whole plot playing out like it's a goofy old tv show.... I love it. But is it too snappy, quirky, and wisecracking to be relatable to most kids? Is it just weird librarians like me that love it? Not sure. I didn't think the middle schoolers would be into Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and I was completely wrong, so hopefully I'm wrong this time too... ( )

Ruby Redfort is a kick. I'm liking this even more than the first one.

Ruby was first introduced in the Clarice Beans novels. Ruby is a detective, but I see her more as a spy-in-training. Strange things are happening in Twinford, where Ruby and her parents live. Sea creatures are acting strangely, oceans currents are changing, and the Twinford pirates have been attacking ships. What's a young spy and codebraker to do -- Why jump right in and solve the case. Ruby is adventurous and a master of misdirection when it comes to getting in her spy training. The book is a delight to read and at the same time shows a 13 year-old who is smart and cool and who doesn't need foul language to make a point. I look forward to reading other books in the series.
