Kevin Wilson's characters inhabit a world that moves seamlessly between the real and the imagined, the mundane and the fantastic. "Grand Stand-In" is narrated by an employee of the Nuclear Family Supplemental Provider-a company that supplies "stand-ins" for families with deceased, ill, or just plain mean grandparents. And in "Blowing Up On the Spot," a story singled out by Ann Patchett for Ploughshares, a young woman works sorting tiles at a Scrabble factory after her parents have spontaneously combusted. 2.5 Hard to rate- some stories were good, some not so much… ( )

Now that I've decided to try to 'review' each book that I have cataloged, there will be books( like this one) where I may recall reading it some years ago, may or may not remember how or why I liked it, but still can recall only a few or maybe no details about the experience. ( )

Is Kevin Wilson becoming one of my favorite authors? Well, let's see...I read one of his novels three times, once aloud to my kids. Both his novels and his short stories make me laugh in the sad way I enjoy, like things are bad and likely to get worse, but there's this little thing, at least. And when I see a title by him I immediately add it to my TBR but try to time my reading of it so I don't get through it too quickly. So I suspect the answer is yes. These early stories of his feel a little different than his later writing, but still carry his hallmarks. ( )

Picked this up from a free shelf at work; knew nothing about it. Ended up enjoying it a lot. ( )

I had hoped this would be on the same level as "The Family Fang" but alas, it was not. The short stories are interesting though many of them left me cold with 2 or 3 exceptions. That said, his other book was wonderful in all respects. ( )
