This is another one of those "free ebooks" offered on Amazon which allows me to explore other genres without much risk. I don't normally read horror and zombie stories, but found myself hooked on "Watchers" within the first few pages. I expected it to evolve into a similar storyline like "The Fog" after the main characters find themselves trapped inside of a grocery store when a thick fog suddenly envelopes the neighborhood. Those outside are suffering and howling while experiencing a transformation from the effects of the fog; turning them into blistering, burned remnants of their former selves. Unlike other zombie stories, these "walking dead" are much different; they're faster, smarter, more deadly and can speak - oh and they communicate with each other telepathically. A simple touch is all that is needed to turn a normal human into one of these creatures. Therefore, to escape and evade, this small group must protect themselves from both the environment and the creatures. No hazard suits? Improvise!

The author shows his creativity throughout the story by having a plot that continuously twists and turns. Who are these "Watchers? Are they aliens from outer space? Are they made-made? Can they be demons from hell itself? Where is sanctuary and how does this small group of survivors get there? Who will die during their escape from the market? Who will survive until the end?

The book is difficult to put down because it is a fast-moving story - unlike other zombie books that I've read. My only disappointment is that the ending still left me with unanswered questions as it seems to end abruptly. I also deleted one star due to typos that exist throughout the text. However, it is a great story and well worth reading. Great job Mr. Douglas!
