Usually, the first book of a new Star Wars series can be quite dull. There may be some action and excitement, but generally the first book is a set up for the next 6-7 books to follow. Crucible doesn't follow this pattern at all. This is a solid story filled with excitement, close calls, and centers around the four main people Star Wars fans want to read about- namely Luke, Leia, Han, and Lando.

The story follows after the end of the last one with some time in between. I am writing a review without spoilers, so let me just say that this is worth your time, if you are an extended universe fan. The ending is one that most fans more than likely have wanted to see. It has the four main, plus the return of Vestra (not a spoiler as it happens early) and the next generation of Skywalkers/Jedi, but really focuses on the four main.

Troy Denning is one of my favorite extended universe writers and I look forward to what he writes. There will obviously be more to come in this new series, but this book could almost be self contained. Be sure to pick this one up if you have been deep into the extended universe, but if this is your intro, it might be worth your time to read the last series, so you know the importance of some of the characters. ( )

Star Wars Crucible was the last in the legends series before Disney came in and ruined everything.

As always for the Star Wars audiobooks the audio-phonic story telling was amazing.

The story felt a bit rushed, I think they could have done multiple books here.

Grand Master Luke heads off to help Hann and Leia when they haven't been heard from,and he hopes to hear from his son Ben Skywalker.

Hann plays a lot of Sabacc, and I kept wondering if anyone actually made a game for sale. An internet search leads me to believe several have. Denning has a way of telling of the love Hann has for Leia in a way that just makes my heart weep.

Much of the later part of the book takes place in this sort of reverse force black whole that had some...interesting subplots built into its existence.

All and all it is an ending to the Legends series, and it actually does sort of give an actual ending, though not the one the story leads you to think you'll get. It does seem a bit rushed, but I don't think the authors were actually ready to end it, but had been instructed to by the media giants associated, so they did the best they could.

Crucible isn't officially part of any other Legends series, so in theory you could read it on its own, you certainly don't have to have head everything leading up to it, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it all on its own. ( )

This book starts off good but then drop off quickly. The location of the Rift sounds cool; a place difficult to travel to, loaded with pirates and companies competing for the riches in the astroids floating around. Throw in the only communications rig around is open to everyone to listen in on and you have a good setting for conspiracy, ambushes, and all sorts of fun star warsy battles. But then it drops into long descriptions of torture, endless games of sabacc, and a weird force battle. Was not what I expected and I'm glad that it is not the start of a series. ( )

If this isn't the end of Luke, Leia and Han as major characters, then I'll eat my hat.   I actually enjoyed the story and found it "slightly" above the average recent Star Wars novels. It was really weird seeing Luke and Leia go all "Anakin II". It was a good thing that Denning wasn't allowed to kill any of them.   I will say, I don't see much of a future in the Star Wars universe between this book and where the comic books start up with Ben's grandkid [or whoever Caid is]. Jaina, Jag and the other characters just aren't interesting enough, imo, to have their own storylines.   And that means that we'll probably get more of those awful Old Republic novels based on the video games. I've Kenobi on tap, but after that, I'm not really sure I want to keep on reading in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. " ( )
