Süskind (1906-1945), a German Jew born with dual citizenship (his father was a Dutch Jew), fled with his wife from Düsseldorf to the Netherlands in 1938. They settled in the south, where he could continue working for Unilever. In 1941 the Germans forced all the Jews there to move to Amsterdam. Süskind became a member of the Joodse Raad. In 1942 he was appointed as director of the Schouwburg, the site in Amsterdam of internment of Jews prior to their deportation. Children (under 16 years of age) were placed in a crèche opposite the Schouwburg and Süskind formed a group that smuggled hundreds of children out of there; many survived in hiding. He tried in vain to set up a similar escape team in Westerbork. In 1944 he and his family were interned in Westerbork, and from there were sent to Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. In 1945 he was evacuated and died during the death march. His wife and daughter died in Auschwitz.… (altro)
