And so concludes this series concerning Rogue Squadron. This one wraps up the events from the previous books and details the end of the bacta war which came about because of the infection of Coruscant when the empire left it. Overall pretty good. This is the first time that I read the series although i tried starting it a couple of times since it came out in 1996. I have all the paperbacks that I bought when they first came out and I am glad I finally got around to reading them.

Unfortunately, I didn't like this as much as the others. Which is a shame, because the story is quite cool. But the plot armor and Gary Stu-ness are too strong in this one to still be enjoyable. I kept hoping it would be countered with a massive fail, but I was disappointed.
The final battle was really well done, but it, too, had problems with plot armor. None of the main characters died... in a super high-stakes battle? Come on!

On top of that, the pacing is off. I suspect Stackpole was given a page limit and would have needed more for the story he wanted to tell. That would explain the POVs, of which there were too many, and their short chapters. We jump around constantly and I couldn't really get into any individual story.

I still enjoyed this book. It's fun, a lot of things happen, the plot is good... I just didn't enjoy it as much as the others. And there were parts that read more like a male power fantasy, which was disappointing, because I know Stackpole can do better. ( )

And with that, the Rogue series draws to a close, leaving me satisfied and feeling as though I could pilot my very own X-wing. ( )
