When Felix Gomez returned from the War in Iraq with a disdain for daylight and a raging thirst for blood, he knew he couldn't settle for an ordinary 9-to-5 job. So after his discharge, the newly undead ex-infantryman chose the career that he felt best suited his vampiric tendencies: private detective. Now he's been approached by sexy porn star Katz Meow, who wants Felix to investigate the murder of her once-equally agile friend and fellow toiler in the video sex-biz, Roxy Bronze. But his investigation into L.A.'s hardcore jungle is turning into a triple x-rated nightmare populated by hot babes, sleazy producers, sleazier politicians, sham evangelicals, and fanatical secret societies. And here on the seamy underside of Tinseltown, “immortal” doesn't necessarily mean “unkillable.”… (altro)

My sister made me read this one. It's a fun crime thriller involving vampires, with a vampire detective that reminds me a lot of Kevin J. Anderson's zombie detective. I was expecting to find this book hard to get into, but after reading several Koontz novels, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to become absorbed in this book. It was far easier to accept the vampires in this book than some of the characters and situations I slogged through in those Koontz books. I liked the bits of this book that are anchored in Colorado, too. This is an excellent read for thriller-lovers and vampire fans, and anyone who likes detective fiction. ( )

OK... I think this deserves a 2.8. I just thought it was a bit too messy, and thrown together too quickly at the end. I'm still going to proceed with the series, because I think it has potential, but I'm going to take a little break from it for a while. ( )

What happens when you ask a vampire to investigate the murder of a doctor turned porn star, and then put him right in the middle of a large-scale conspiracy that's as dangerous to vampires as it is to humans?

A hilarious noir that ends up being a ridiculously page-turning read. Acevedo's pace is perfect in this mystery, and the characters are simply fun. Absolutely recommended. ( )

Also not as trashy as it sounds, but a good solid private-detective story with bonus supernatural politics. I like this guy. ( )

This book is fun, its a fast read, interesting characters, but mostly fun. This is not great literature, but a beach read at its finest.

This time around, Felix is asked to work on a case in Los Angeles, involving a murder of a porn star. He manages to anger all sorts of people, from a powerful city council woman, to a group dedicated to promoting vampire-human happiness... He needs to figure out the murder without pissing off the Araneum (the Vampire Council) while staying alive.

The characters are fun, a bit stereotypical. The premise was a bit over the top (but that adds to the fun). Everything is bold. I do like the vampires in this story- they are not sparkly, but not full Dracula either. A nice balance of otherness, scariness, and human-ess. ( )
