A decent amount of repetition for a few topics, but otherwise very informative. ( )

A collection of essays, Thomas Sowell's 'Reader', presents the thinking of one of America's economic giants in bite sized chunks, wholly accessible to the layman. A wide variety of critical economic and social issues are in view, and Sowell repeatedly offers his characteristic punch with statistics and arguments that cut through the junk thinking that holds too much sway in our culture and politics. This is the first book I have read or own by Thomas Sowell. I know him to be a thoughtful and thorough man on any subject he tackles, for this reason alone due to its length, preparing to read this book was a bit daunting to say the least. A sizable book, coming in just a few pages shy of 400, I opened the front cover and saw the table of contents, I was relieved to see it was a collection of essays.

Separated into categories to by subject, the professor covers such topics as education, social justice, economics, race relations. He even has several longer themes about Karl Marx, geography as it relates to our human condition and "good intentions" of social programs and their unintended consequences.

I have heard that he has averaged a book a year, and he has been writing for 30 years! Never one to mince words, he essays are thought provoking, timeless, and persuasive. His abridged biography was very interesting to say the least. For a man spending the earliest, formative years in two homes without benefit of running water, let alone electricity, he has attained a well-respected reputation and a highest degree of learning not expected of those at the lowest rungs of poverty.

The only shortcoming I found with this book was the essays were not dated. I can only assume these pieces were for his syndicated column. ( )
