There was a bit of mix I could have done without and info in the last few pages that could have been wonderfully added in the meat of the story to really make it eerie and very interesting. ( ) I so wanted this book to renew my faith in horror authors, but I think I may need to keep looking. It had promise when it first started but, as I continued reading, I felt like I was trudging uphill in the mud. The storyline never really found its feet and, like me, kept trudging along. I couldn't invest in any of the characters, but kept reading to the end (I think it was the end, it was so inconclusive), hoping they would actually emerge into people I could cheer for. The plotlinek had so much promise, but I felt that the Author lost the momentum he had when he started writing, and this is a shame. I need to reread this at a later date. I saw the movie that was based on this not too long ago, and I couldn't think past it, once the book got to part two I was just lost and kept getting confused. I loved the writing style, the way this was written was very realistic and felt like this could happen at any time. I also loved the banter and camaraderie between the men in part 1. 3 stars. Nevill has a pretentious writing style copied off of other legendary writers (someone mentioned Cormac McCarthy - apt comparison). The structure of the book is disjointed and does not flow, and I seriously could have done without the Blood Frenzy plotline. It's cheap and lazy to have Black Metal bands be shorthand for "pagan murderers." That part of the book jolted me out of the story altogether. There's tension and horror in many moments, but Nevill missed the opportunity and importance of exploring some of the supernatural components in the story. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

"When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect with one another. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise. With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry, and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, Luke figures things couldn't possibly get any worse. But then they stumble across an old habitation. Ancient artefacts decorate the walls and there are bones scattered upon the dry floors. The residue of old rites and pagan sacrifice for something that still exists in the forest. Something responsible for the bestial presence that follows their every step. As the four friends stagger in the direction of salvation, they learn that death doesn't come easy among these ancient trees . . "-- Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
