Framed for the brutal murders of his classmates by the mysterious Red Man, middle school student Ganta Igarashi finds himself sentenced to death and sent to the bizarre and fatal theme park/prison that has risen from the ruins of the Great Tokyo Earthquake--a hell on earth known as "Deadman Wonderland." With their leader captured, Scar Chain's uprising is thwarted by the Undertakers. Ganta seeks training so he can learn to use his Branch of Sin powers, even though doing so will draw him further into the deadly plots brewing inside the prison. The final battle between Scar Chain and the Undertakers is coming, but who really wins when one of them loses?… (altro)

Same old "I will save my friends" trope, almost a cliché--but it's the shounen subgenre's fault, not the mangaka's.

The work is really detailed and visceral, but occasionally combat close-ups are a bit hard to make sense of. ( )

Ganta decides to join Nagi's prison escape foil but things turn for the worse when Nagi is captured by Genkaku and psychologically tortured with drugs to try to bend him to the edge and attack the inmates that are trying to escape.

I like this part of the plot and the great battle of Ganta vs Genkaku. I do feel riled with the horrible things Ganta says to poor Shiro that genuinely wants to help him. If there is one thing that igggered me during this volume, it would be the totally unrealistic scene where Kanako gets stabbed. She was supposed to block the attack with the defensive abilities of her branch of sin but this image reveals that the sword reaches her spinal cord. In the real world the injury would have left her quadriplejic with a stab wound to her aorta= guaranteed death in less than 1 minute. The author could have cleverly confused the reader with a stab wound to the skin but make everyone in the scene assume Karako was genuinely wounded by peripheral view of the attack by the other Deadmen.

That scene alone lost realism points and therefore lost shock value. I wanted to throw popcorn at the manga for that scene alone. ( )

This is the fifth volume in the Deadman Wonderland series. I honestly don’t have a ton to say about this volume. It was okay. There is more battling between the Undertakers and Scar Chain.

The leader of Scar Chain, Karako, is being held captive by the Undertakers. Meanwhile Ganta decides he is sick of being helpless and asks Senji for help developing his powers.

This volume is basically about Scar Chain attempting to rescue Karako and then trying to escape out of Deadman Wonderland.

There is a lot of action and we learn a little more both about the Deadmen and the Undertakers. I am still enjoying Ganta as a character and like watching him develop his powers. I also enjoy the ever enthusiastic, yet deadly, Shiro.

Out of all of the volumes so far this one was probably the least shocking and the least interesting. The story progresses in a fairly predictable way. There weren’t really any new characters added to the story (which is fine because there are a lot of characters to keep track of already).

Overall this was an okay addition to the Deadman Wonderland series. I really loved the first couple books in this series, but the last few haven’t been quite as good. I honestly am not dying to read the next book in the series, so I probably won’t continue reading it. I would recommend checking out the first volume is you like sci-fi/dystopian/horror type manga and seeing how you enjoy it. ( )
