I have always been very partial to stories set in Oxford, and Oxford-based historical novelist, Kate Ivory is an appealing protagonist. This book marks her third investigation. I think it would be difficult to dislike Kate – she is pragmatic, sensible and very direct and honest (alarmingly so on occasion). She also has an unfortunate knack of becoming embroiled in murder investigations.

On this occasion, although she hadn’t previously known the victim (Dr Olivia Blackett, an expert on nineteenth century English literature, and Charles Dickens in particular), beyond a brief and unproductive meeting shortly before the murder occurred, she had wanted to become better acquainted with her. Kate had been working on a fictional account of Charles Dickens’s complicated personal life, revolving around his relationships with Ellen Ternan and her sister Maria. Her interest is piqued when she learns of Dr Blackett’s discovery of a collection of letters from the sisters, and hopes to be able to peruse them with a view to bolstering the plot of her novel.

Meanwhile, a group of travellers has arrived in Oxford, including Angel, a young woman who has suffered dreadful loss, and whose memory of the recent past is unreliable. Angel also wishes to contact Dr Blackett, but won’t, or can’t, explain the reason to her fellow travellers, who have taken on her care as a communal responsibility. The paths of the individual travellers, including Angel, cross occasionally with Kate’s, including on the day on which Dr Blackett is killed. In classic whodunnit style, there is a big group of potential suspects, all with clear opportunity and different motives, including Kate and people close to her.

Veronica Stallwood delivers the story in clear prose that keeps the plot moving briskly. I think I was slightly less keen on this book than the two previous ones from the series that I read recently, but am still keen to follow Kate’s adventures into the next volume. ( )

Kate Ivory est écrivaine à Oxford mais elle ne fait pas partie du monde académique, duquel elle est plutôt très éloignée. Elle est habillée comme tout le monde (je me la suis imaginée en C&A) et est une jeune femme très dynamique et volontaire, vivant plutôt dans l’action que dans la réflexion. Pour être franche, elle est tout de même proche du monde académique vu que depuis quelques mois, elle sort avec Liam, un professeur de musique du Leicester College. Kate Ivory, malgré toutes ses activités, est en train de réfléchir à son prochain roman sur les soeurs Ternan, Maria et Ellen. Pour ceux qui l’ignorent (comme moi avant), Ellen Ternan, dite Nelly, était la muse de Dickens. Pour pimenter son livre (et surtout méliorer ses ventes), Kate cherche quelque chose de croustillant à se mettre sous la dent comme par exemple un enfant naturel avec Nelly. Pour cela, elle compte sur une universitaire, Olivia Blacket, appartenant aussi au Leicester College car cette dernière vient juste de mettre la main sur la correspondance entre les deux sœurs et est en train de la retranscrire.

Kate cherche donc à la rencontrer. Le problème est que Olivia Blacket a de nombreux problèmes personnels. Liam (oui, oui, le même Liam) n’est pas prêt à lui donner autant d’amour qu’elle en aurait besoin. De plus, elle aimerait beaucoup avoir un enfant. Son supérieur la harcèle avec son chien pour essayer de récupérer la correspondance et plublier en son nom. Forcément, quand elle prend connaissance de la demande de Kate, Olivia refuse la rencontre. L’écrivaine ne se laisse pas faire. Après une approche gentille (aller de force au domicile de la dame), elle tente le vol au bureau du collège. Olivia sera retrouvée morte peu de temps après, dans son bureau. L’enquête, menée séparément par Kate et par la police, montrera que beaucoup de gens avaient des raisons de tuer Olivia.

J’ai beaucoup aimé ce livre. Pour être honnête, l’enquête ne casse pas trois pattes à un canard. Au bout de 100 pages, on se doute du dénouement même si le pourquoi du meurtre est plus surprenant.

Ce qui fait le charme du livre, c’est le cadre et l’héroïne car l’auteur adopte un point de vue particulier pour un roman sur Oxford. On se promène dans les quartiers d’Oxford et dans le centre-ville plutôt que dans les collèges. On trouve plus les “vrais gens” que les universitaires. C’est ce qu’incarne plus ou moins Kate aussi. En prenant une héroïne moins érudite que l’inspecteur Morse de Colin Dexter, Veronica Stallwood démystifie un peu la ville, en tout cas à mes yeux. Kate analyse les universitaires comme des extra-terrestres qui vivent dans un autre monde avec des coutumes plus bizarres les unes que les autres. Elle essaye tant bien que mal de les apprivoiser.

En résumé, une petite lecture bien agréable. ( )

Protagonist Kate Ivory, a writer of historical romances, lives in Oxford, but is not exactly of it. She has no University degree, and many of the academics who surround her are a bit scornful of her work. In search of a bit of Victorian-era scandal to spice up her latest book project, Kate attempts to interview Olivia Blacket, a Fellow of the mythical Leicester College, who has recently come into possession of the diaries and letters of an Oxford woman connected with Charles Dickens.

Meanwhile, an odd little "family" of four men and a woman have arrived to squat and busk in Oxford. The woman, whom they call Angel, remembers very little about herself -- only that she must reach Leicester, and the name, Olivia Blacket.

How Kate's and Angel's paths intersect and what comes of it makes a fascinating mystery which also deepens the character of Kate, in her third appearance in a mystery novel. In fact, all the characters are well-drawn, and the setting in Oxford seems very real. The title refers both to an annual event at Leicester College commemorating the victim of a 16th-century murder, and to the problems of some of the characters. I gave this only three stars because of one annoying clue which was obvious to me but which no one in the book worked out until the very end. Still, it was very enjoyable and I'll be reading more of Ms. Stallwood's book. ( )
